Stewart Scullion would move to Sheffield United in May for £25,000, Ray Lugg didn’t go until July 1972 when he joined Plymouth Argyle for £3,500. Ken Furphy left Watford in July to become manager of Blackburn Rovers.

A wall collapsed behind one of the goals early in the game injuring six supporters. The game resumed after a 10 minute stoppage. In the programme notes for the replay it was noted that none of the injuries were serious.
