4th January 2026- Championship, Hull City v Watford, Match postponed

The game was called off just 23 minutes before kick off. The Watford players came over to the away fans to tell them that the game was off before any announcement had been made in the ground. The news then started to appear on social media before finally confirmation was given in the stadium that the match was postponed.

Ince explains ‘strange’ Hull postponement from Watford players’ perspective

From the Rookery End: Watford’s away trip to Hull City was dramatically called off just 18 minutes before kick-off, leaving hundreds of travelling Hornets fans frustrated after making a 400-mile round trip. Among them was our own Mike, who left home at 7am and didn’t make it back until his 7pm train that evening. With no full From The Rookery End podcast this week, we’re sharing Mike’s appearance on BBC Radio Humberside, where he joined host James Hoggarth on Monday night to give the Watford fans’ perspective. Mike talks through the disappointment, the logistics, and the emotions felt by supporters left stranded after a long day of travel — and asks what more could (and should) have been done.

4th January 2025- Championship, Watford 1 Sheffield United 2

WFC.Net goal commentary: 1

BBC: Sheffield United ended a run of three Championship games without a win by triumphing at out-of-form Watford.

Sky: The home side almost went behind just after the half-hour when Bachmann received a back pass, attempted a Cruyff turn under pressure from O’Hare and was extremely fortunate to see the United player’s tackle roll inches wide of his post.

Don’t let the current poor run define the season so far as a whole

BHappy: Back at Vicarage Road, the prospect of more football is rendered attractive by the Graham Taylor matchday even if I do rather wish that the presentation of it could be rather less earnest, rather less forced. But the scarves are great and the old clips are great and seeing old faces again is great too. Ross Jenkins, Steve Terry, Steve Sherwood, Gary Porter and Ian Bolton have been relatively frequent visitors over the years; applauding them won’t ever get old but it’s not new. Brian Pollard and Trevor How haven’t been presented for a while though, ditto Keith Cassells whose kit Mum’s Aunt used to sponsor back when that was a thing. Paul Franklin, entertainingly, proves to be as awkward and ungainly an interviewee as he was a centre-back.

Fran’s Watford Blog: The final action of the game was a powerful shot from McCallum that was blocked by Bachmann who landed awkwardly and was clearly in a lot of pain. He was down being treated for some time and the referee made the sensible decision to blow the final whistle without restarting play. There wasn’t much of a lap of honour as the players crowded around the goal to check on their teammate. When Dan was finally stretchered off, I was quite moved to see the Sheffield United players, who had been celebrating in front of their fans, turn as one to applaud him off the pitch.

From the Rookery End: Watford slumped to a third straight defeat at Vicarage Road, as Chris Wilder’s depleted Blades took all three points in our first home game of 2025. Much like the game, this is a pod of two halves, with Colin and DCW joining Jon pre-match, leaving Mike, Jas and Kieran to talk through the game at the final whistle.

Nigel Pearson said the FA Cup is “not a priority” as a much-changed Watford threw away a three-goal lead against Tranmere in Saturday’s third-round tie.

At half-time Watford were cruising to victory but had this match gone on any longer they would surely have lost. A full-pelt comeback from Tranmere Rovers saw the League One strugglers overturn a three-goal deficit against Premier League opponents to secure a replay at Prenton Park. As Rovers manager Micky Mellon put it: “You can see the quality of these teams, but if you get the momentum it doesn’t matter how good they are, it’s difficult to get it back.”

Thought number one is to ponder why Watford away is such a big pull for the support of a side struggling at the foot of League One, big respect in any case.  Thought number two is to ponder that most of those in the away end, even those over the age of 30, are probably completely oblivious of the significance afforded to what, to them, was probably a mundane away defeat here in 1999.  My god.  Thought number three is to wonder how many of our matchday squad weren’t even born in April 1999.  Answer:  eight.  Eight!  With Sarr and Callum Whelan babes in arms.  Thought number four is to Stop Thinking.

We had been coasting at half time and Rovers had been poor.  But the loss of Chalobah and then Quina changed the game and the whole of the second half seemed to be played with Watford on the back foot.  I briefly thought that it looked like one of those games that Liverpool used to play in the 80s when they would play for a draw in the first leg of a league cup game before battering the opposition in the second leg.  But those games were controlled 0-0 draws.  This game was quite baffling.  It has to be said that it was an opportunity for those who were on the fringes to show Pearson what they can do.  Sadly, I don’t think that Success or Gray did anything that would convince him to include them against Bournemouth.  However, Chalobah had another good outing, Dele-Bashiru looked excellent and João Pedro put in a decent showing.  The fitness problems of the fringe players was a cause for concern and they may find themselves with some extra routines in training.
