19th January 2013- Championship, Watford 4 Huddersfield Town 0 Leave a Reply Matej Vydra scored twice and won a penalty as Watford cemented their place in the top six and left Huddersfield without a league win in 12. Cristian Battocchio rounded off a comfortable win with five minutes left, flicking the ball into the far corner after a fantastic passing move. The first surprise was that the game was on at all.  Yesterday’s rather testing weather conditions had made that seem highly unlikely (even if it’s difficult to judge quite how the rest of the world is getting on from the arctic isolation of a cul-de-sac, media updates or otherwise). So… big respect to those who answered the call and turned up with shovels early in the morning, and to all others involved in getting the game played. https://www.soccerbase.com/matches/results.sd?date=2013-01-19 https://www.11v11.com/league-tables/league-championship/19-january-2013/ Share this:TwitterFacebook
5th January 2013- FA Cup Third Round, Manchester City 3 Watford 0 Leave a Reply Watford manager Gianfranco Zola, twice an FA Cup winner as a player, predicted his team would be dangerous opponents for the 2011 winners, especially considering their fine league record away from home. Watford almost caught City napping straight from the kick-off as Fernando Forestieri beat the home offside trap to go one-on-one with Costel Pantilimon but the big keeper stood firm to keep out the shot out with his feet. Had that one gone in, City may have faced a different challenge against a confident team on the hunt for a giant-killing. It is easy to see why Watford are going so well in the Championship. As might be expected of a Gianfranco Zola team, they have some lively attackers and ideas. Joleon Lescott and Vincent Kompany had their hands full with Matej Vydra, who embarrassed the City central defenders for pace in the opening few minutes. Trying to play on the break only resulted in the visitors finding themselves pushed on to the back foot, however, allowing City to keep rolling forward. In a game where City enjoyed by far the most possession and spent long periods laying siege to the Watford goalmouth, the Championship side managed to create the two clearest opportunities of the afternoon, and missed them both. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2012%E2%80%9313_FA_Cup Share this:TwitterFacebook
