29th August 2020- Friendly, Watford 1 Scunthorpe United 0

This was very much in the pre-pandemic style of a ‘behind closed doors’ game as no details of our team were given either on the official site or twitter.

A Watford XI defeated Scunthorpe United at Vicarage Road this afternoon, thanks to a first-half goal from summer signing Jeremy Ngakia.

BBC SportScunthorpe picked up a second league win of the week to cause an upset as Watford’s fine form came to an end.

TelegraphThe script suggested a leisurely stroll for the hosts. Starting the campaign among the favourites for relegation has galvanised Watford without the burden of expectation.

BHappy imageThis one stank to high heaven… and there exists no more reliable an indicator of an awful performance than the home crowd, at 2-0 down, booing the display of four added minutes at the end of the game as being too long.

21st November 2009- Championship, Watford 3 Scunthorpe United 0

Heidar Helguson scored a brace to help Watford sink Scunthorpe.

The more this goes on, the greater is the credence to the argument that we’re not playing a succession of bad teams at home… we’re making teams look bad. Our midfield was again phenomenal, Lansbury and Cowie in particular standing out, and that movement and ball retention is going to expose plenty of teams, even those that haven’t had to cope with an early morning hotel fire alarm like Scunny. It could have been six.

3rd January 2009- FA Cup Third Round, Watford 1 Scunthorpe United 0

Grzegorz Rasiak’s second half goal sent championship side Watford into the fourth round of the FA Cup at the expense of League One Scunthorpe.

We’ve seen some awful cup performances in recent years (in stark contrast to one era in our history in particular).  But this was a particularly disconcerting flavour of awful.  Lots of possession, very little penetration, an incomprehensible retraction back to a lone striker once we got ahead… it all felt a bit Vialli again somehow.

‘The band and the goal, that was all that was worth seeing’ I heard a bloke on the way out say and he was right. Still, its nice to be in the next round.
