23rd August 2025- Championship, Swansea City 1 Watford 1

Watford Observer pre-match coverage: Paulo Pezzolano eager for first away win as Watford seek consistency

BBC: Zan Vipotnik’s late header saw Swansea City fight back to draw with Watford after teenager Nestory Irankunda’s sparkling free-kick had looked set to end the Hornets’ long wait for an away win.

Sky: Watford had only found the net three times in their previous seven league trips – the previous six of those being defeats – but they went ahead 10 minutes before the break and it came from a moment of magic from Irankunda.

Fran’s Watford Blog: It had been an enjoyable game. Watford had been excellent in the first half. Kjerrumgaard had a couple of decent chances and the goal from Irankunda was a thing of beauty. What a joy that we were behind the goal to see it fly into the top corner. Swansea made a much better fist of the second half, so a draw was probably a fair result, but an away point should always be treasured. The greatest concern of the afternoon was how apparent it was that we were lacking strength in depth. The first XI were excellent, but the replacements were generally not of the same quality.

From the Rookery End: As the Hornets made their second away trip of the season, this time down to south Wales to face Swansea City, the team behind the microphones was split in two. Mike, Kieran, and Ryan braved the long journey down the M4, while Jon, Jordi, Olly, and DCW opted for the considerably shorter — and far more sociable — trip to the Railway Arms opposite Bushey station.

MK Dons

BBC Sport: League One MK Dons pulled off a Carabao Cup shock with a 2-0 victory over Championship Watford at Vicarage Road. Goals either side of half-time from Matthew Dennis and Darragh Burns were enough to book their third round place for the first time in three seasons.

fran's watford blogAs we waited for kick-off, a lot of balls were flying in to the Rookery, one of which hit a little lad a couple of rows behind me.  I heard applause and then saw Guedioura running up the aisle past us to make sure that the child was OK and give him a ball to take home.  That may well have been the highlight of the evening.

BBC Sport: Watford and Southampton served up an uninspiring draw as they both remain without a league win after three games of the top-flight season. Hornets midfielder Etienne Capoue had the best chance of the game only to head over from two yards.

Sky Sports: Hornets boss Quique Sanchez Flores resisted the temptation to hand debuts to new signings Miguel Britos, Giedrius Arlauskis and Nathan Ake, although the first two were on the bench.

Fran’s Watford Blog: The positive outcome of the day was that Watford remained unbeaten and stood 11th in the table. The negative was that, despite the efforts, there hadn’t been a single shot on target. The combination of Deeney and Ighalo hasn’t worked in the last two games, so it is very likely that Flores will make a change for the City game. The final word must go to Diamanti whose second half performance I thoroughly enjoyed. His whipped crosses really deserved a final touch. We can only hope that will come to pass in coming weeks.

23rd August 2014- Championship, Watford 4 Leeds United 1

Watford won the clash of the Championship’s two Italian-owned clubs as they overcame nine-man Leeds United.

So, here we are, four games in, three wins and one defeat, and the manager’s job on the line. Notably, the pressure comes from inside rather than outside; these are questions being asked by the players rather than the fans. There’s no sense of mutiny around Vicarage Road, nothing more than a familiar impatient tetchiness, common to all modern football grounds. But you look at that squad – a winning squad, for pity’s sake – and you can’t see any structure at all.

When I entered the ground, Macca was being interviewed by Luther.  What a joy to listen to my two all-time favourite players chatting.  When they finished, I made my way around to the Lower Rous to give Don a bag that he had left in the West Herts.  As I reached the disabled area, Don was coming to greet me and pointing rather urgently behind me.  I turned and there was John McClelland looking exactly as he did in the 80s.  I immediately turned into a gibbering star struck fan.  I managed to blurt out that I’d loved watching him play and went to shake his hand and found myself being warmly hugged.  It is quite possible that my feet will never touch the ground again.
