3rd March 2019- Premier League, Watford 2 Leicester City 1

This game was given added spice by the announcement five days beforehand that former Watford manager Brendan Rodgers had left Celtic to take over the vacant manager’s job at Leicester City. The Guardian detailed the story of his time at Vicarage Road.

The new Leicester City manager is likely to get a hostile reception at Vicarage Road after an abrupt departure in 2009 but his players remember him warmly

A last-gasp goal from Andre Gray denied Brendan Rodgers his first point as Leicester manager as Watford earned a 2-1 win in the Premier League on Sunday. Rodgers’ debut saw him return to the club where got his first managerial job after being appointed at Leicester on Tuesday, but it was a terrible start for the former Celtic boss as Troy Deeney scored inside five minutes.

Troy Deeney insists there will be no Watford “meltdown” this season after the Hornets continued their impressive campaign with a late victory over Leicester in Brendan Rodgers’ first game in charge of the Foxes.

Watford boss Javi Gracia says his team “deserved” the win after beating Leicester City 2-1 at Vicarage Road, the Spaniard is also pleased with the “ambition” his players continue to show, saying they want “more and more” as the Hornets aim to finish the season strongly.

A late goal from the substitute, Andre Gray, gave Watford all three points as Brendan Rodgers began life at Leicester with a defeat

Among all the accusations that have swirled around since Brendan Rodgers swapped Celtic for Leicester, there has been little suggestion that he picked the easy option. Watford provided an instant crash course in the perpetual uncertainty of the Premier League’s middle third and, when the substitute Andre Gray ran through in added time to send a charged-up Vicarage Road into raptures, it felt like enough to stop even the most incorrigible optimist in their tracks.

Leicester were indebted to Kasper Schmeichel and then Wes Morgan for keeping Watford out from a third-minute free-kick, only to fall behind to another free-kick two minutes later. Gerard Deulofeu curled in the dead ball with such ferocity that Troy Deeney needed only to allow it to skim the top of his head to beat Schmeichel.

The beginning, strictly speaking, is Tuesday’s management announcement in Leicestershire which confirmed that for the third home game in a row we would be facing a former boss. The third of the three home games this calendar year incidentally versus nine away of which only two defeats, a figure distorted by cup draws and Spurs’ stadium nonsense… but these statistics which highlight how well the present incumbent is doing and how the identity and history of the Other Bloke only matters up to a point.

Leicester’s decision to dispense with the services of Claude Puel and appoint Brendan Rodgers meant that this was the third home game in a row in which we would face a former manager.  It also ensured a better atmosphere than may have been expected on a Sunday lunchtime as Mr Integrity returned to Vicarage Road.

BBC SportSwansea survived a remarkable Watford fight back to record their first away win of the season in the league.

BHappy imageAs so often with Brendan Rodgers, the reality was greyer than the eye-catching press release. If Vicarage Road was ever able to summon up a tabloid-friendly “hate mob”, then someone’s evidently mislaid the pitchforks and flaming torches in the years since; the lurid pre-match hype conjured up some exciting images – heads on spikes for goalposts, that kind of thing – but it’s remarkably hard to get genuinely angry about a dull, stumpy man in a raincoat. He’s not got a career in pantomime to fall back on, put it that way.

26th September 2009- Championship, Reading 1 Watford 1

This was the first and only time we faced Brendan Rodgers’ Reading side.  He quit as Hornets boss in the summer to become the Royals manager just two weeks after saying that journalists who continually linked him with the Reading job were questioning his integrity.

He was sacked by Reading on 16th December 2009 when they were 21st.  Under his management they only won 5 league games.

BBC SportReading’s wait for a home league win goes on after Danny Graham scored a second-half equaliser for Watford.  One ex-Watford player, Jobi McAnuff, set up another, Grzegorz Rasiak, to give Reading an early lead.

BHappy imageLook, we weren’t there, ok? So if you’re looking for insightful thunks you’d better look somewhere else; the reasons for non-attendance shall, as ever, remain private but it should go without saying that it was fairly heavy stuff.  I’m assuming that people will want to discuss the match anyway, so do so here if you really must.

4th June 2009- Brendan Rodgers leaves Watford to become Reading manager

The previous month when Reading had sacked Steve Coppell, Rodgers repeatedly denied he was going to leave. His most notable denial was reported in the Watford Observer article shown below. However on this day he walked out of Vicarage Road to take over at the Madjeski. He lasted just over six months and was sacked on the 16th December with Reading 21st in the Championship. The Hornets met Rodgers’ Reading side just once, a 1-1 away draw in September. Most of the chants from the Hornets fans that day referred to his integrity.

The Boss Files: Brendan Rodgers

3rd May 2009- Championship, Watford 3 Derby County 1

Brendan Rodgers last programme notes. This was the game where John Eustace, a Watford player but on loan to Derby, played against us and scored.

Two goals from Grzegorz Rasiak helped Watford to a victory that was not quite as emphatic as the scoreline suggests.

OK, so final day of the season, not much to play for (save finishing above Palace, always nice…).  But given that… what a very fine way to end the campaign.  Nigel Clough’s assertion that the first goal was pivotal was probably fair enough – the game was wide open from the start – but the implication that the Rams were worth something woefully optimistic.

18th April 2009- Championship, Watford 0 Birmingham City 1

Cameron Jerome stepped off the bench to fire in a late winner at Watford and put Birmingham in pole position to join neighbours Wolves in winning promotion.

Watford goalkeeper Scott Loach had earlier had an inspired 45 minutes to frustrate a dominant Birmingham in the first half. But Brendan Rodgers’ side were much improved after the break and could have gone ahead themselves before Jerome made the breakthrough.

A patchy performance saw Watford give as good as they got in the second half and left the manager grateful to his reserve goalkeeper, Colin Doyle, starting a league game for the first time this season. He turned a goal-bound Grzegorz Rasiak header past a post just after the hour.

A touching send-off for Mike Keen before kickoff, with the Birmingham fans adding their applause to that of everyone connected with the club he once managed. I wasn’t around in any meaningful sense back then, I’m afraid, but Simon Marchant was and you can read his tribute here.
