3rd May 2009- Championship, Watford 3 Derby County 1

Brendan Rodgers last programme notes. This was the game where John Eustace, a Watford player but on loan to Derby, played against us and scored.

Two goals from Grzegorz Rasiak helped Watford to a victory that was not quite as emphatic as the scoreline suggests.

OK, so final day of the season, not much to play for (save finishing above Palace, always nice…).  But given that… what a very fine way to end the campaign.  Nigel Clough’s assertion that the first goal was pivotal was probably fair enough – the game was wide open from the start – but the implication that the Rams were worth something woefully optimistic.

BBC SportMarlon King’s 10th goal of the season helped to extend Watford’s unbeaten league run to nine games.

BSAD imageBSAD report: It will be interesting to see whether Adrian Boothroyd’s evident displeasure at the performance has an effect when we take on Plymouth next week; it’s rare that consecutive fixtures are so similar in nature and therefore so easy to compare. He’s right to be annoyed – to summarise, this was largely woeful, and horrible to watch too – but it’s impossible to ignore the impact of injuries on a paper-thin squad, especially those to Ashley Young and Matthew Spring. It’s all very well to say that these situations merely provide opportunities for others…but that doesn’t ring quite true when you’re bringing on Jay Demerit to play as a forward for the last twenty minutes because you don’t have anyone else.

8th May 2005- Championship, Watford 1 West Ham United 2

Helguson scored his 20th goal of the season but it was not enough to prevent Watford slipping to an eighth home defeat of the season and sending West Ham into the play-offs.

On the last day of the season, the result itself is more often than not largely irrelevant. The last time that the last game of the regular season might have been remotely important was during the game against Grimsby in 1999. We won and made the play-offs… as it turned out, had we lost we’d have made them anyway. In 1998, famously, Jason Lee’s scuffed shot won us the title, but we were already promoted some time earlier. The last time that the final game of the regular season had a direct bearing upon which division we operated in during the following campaign was 1994, when we’d have needed to have lost by two goals to Palace at Selhurst Park to have been relegated.
