BBC SportLeague One side Notts County caused an upset by knocking Watford out of the Carling Cup despite the Championship side largely dictating the play.

Bhappy report: So much a game of two halves that using more than a pair of thunks – good thunk, bad thunk – seems a little wasteful. Unless you count this as a thunk in its own right, of course. Ah.

BBC SportAshley Young headed the Hornets ahead and Hameur Bouazza’s neatly slotted penalty made it 2-0 after Young was crudely brought down by Julien Baudet.

BSAD imageBSAD report: The ‘Orns got off to what is becoming a customary bright start once the initial meet and greet stuff had finished and the ball was allowed to meet the turf. In an enjoyable difference from the usual pattern of these sort of games, we got an early lead and never looked back.

BSAD image BSAD reports: Even having been there to witness it, it seems barely possible that this can have been worse than the first leg against Cheltenham. But it was. Much worse. An absolute abomination, a performance that rotted away before your very eyes. Jesus.

This was a slippery slope of a game, often literally, which started out brightly, with plenty of early forward insurgencies and more than competent defensive work. But as the minutes began to crawl by, the Curse of Worthington enveloped Vicarage Road, sucking the life from our fine body of men, leaving them at first on a par with, and finally below, way below, their industrious but seemingly unambitious lower-league opponents.

Evening Standard, 20 Sep 2000

BSAD: The British public reacted with their usual sense of hysteria for the second week running to ensure that the journey Northwards was less than easy. Despite the driving rain and near zero visibility, many more than expected braved the return to this once regular Hornet haunt. Our last visit to the home of the ‘pies might have been remembered for Wayne Andrews solo finale, but it was really the display by Tommy Mooney that won the game that cold Division Two evening…and, as if by magic, Mooney managed to single-handedly turn the mediocre circus of a first half into this most professional of away wins.

BSAD: When the teams came on, Ramage was given a suitable “There’s only one” chant, but virtually as soon as play started this changed to “Always cheating” shouts as he fell over…a lot.

“A day when we want to reward you,” wrote Kenny Jackett in his programme notes. Well, I suppose it’s the thought that counts…
