BBC: The home side struck first when Chris Iwelumo headed in from 12 yards. But Watford levelled when Dan Cowie hit a left-footed effort into the bottom corner and Martin Taylor headed them in front from Jordon Mutch’s cross. However, substitute Ross Wallace fired in from six yards and after Taylor fouled Jay Rodriguez, Graham Alexander fired the penalty into the top corner.

We waved to the team coach, standing on the grass verge of the M1 as they sped past our stricken Fiesta, more to keep warm than anything. To be honest, though, I couldn’t feel more affection for the club right now if they’d stopped, furnished us with as many rub-downs and isotonic sports drinks as we could handle, and towed us home. This Watford team works hard, has the right attitude, carries no one, features no mercenaries or over paid former superstars, and even has cup runs. Call me unambitious, but that’s pretty much all I wanted from the club.

13th November 1973- Floodlight ban comes into effect

The 1973 oil crisis along with strike action by miners caused the government to introduce a ban on the use of floodlights, which caused Saturday games played over the winter to start earlier that usual and midweek matches to be played in the afternoon.
