19th April 2023- Championship, Watford 1 Cardiff City 3

WFC.Net goal commentary: 1

Attendance: 17,005

BBC Sport: Sory Kaba’s stunning overhead strike sealed a vital win for Cardiff City in their Championship survival fight. Cardiff came from behind at Vicarage Road after Ismaila Sarr tapped in his 11th of the season for an early Watford lead.

Sky Sports: Etete netted just after the half-hour mark. The summer signing from Cheltenham accepted Andy Rinomhota’s pass on the right of the box and negotiated his way past challengers before slotting across Bachmann from a tight angle. Cardiff stunned Watford by taking the lead four minutes later. Ryan Wintle’s drive was blocked by a defender but Kipre was first to the rebound and instantly smashed an unstoppable shot beyond Bachmann from the right of the box.

Fran’s Watford Blog: It had been a dreadful half of football.  As too often, an early goal was followed by lots of pretty possession with no goal-scoring chances created and then a complete collapse when the visitors scored.

Watford Observer: Chris Wilder spent more than 20 minutes talking in his press conference after the defeat to Cardiff, and pulled no punches as he assessed the game and the wider picture at Vicarage Road.

19th April 2014- Championship, Watford 3 Ipswich Town 1

Watford kept alive their hopes of reaching the Championship play-offs and dented Ipswich’s with victory at Vicarage Road.

Beppe Sannino said: “Tozser’s the only player I can’t change in this team because I don’t have any other players with his characteristics. He gave us the right balance. He’s the only player that knows he’s going to play in advance.”

This was a game from a parallel universe.  A parallel universe in which this season panned out as we thought it might, in which we really did rip the division up, too good for whatever the Championship could throw at us.  In which a team turning up and haring after us, closing us down up the pitch and denying us space and waiting for us to make a mistake wasn’t anything like enough.  A parallel universe in which, perversely, Beppe Sannino had replaced Gianfranco anyway.  Go figure.  I never claimed to be an expert in this stuff.

19th April 2008- Championship, Watford 0 Crystal Palace 2

Two late goals saw Crystal Palace move to within a point of Watford and dent the hosts’ automatic promotion hopes.

More depressing than Barnsley, if anything.  No lack of effort this time, not really.  We probably edged the first half, and were much the better team at the start of the second.  And Palace still mugged us painfully easily.  This is what we were doing to teams two years ago, of course.
