Manchester United suffered their third defeat in a week as late goals from Juan Zuniga and Troy Deeney gave Watford a deserved Premier League win.

An inspired change by Walter Mazzarri saw substitute Juan Camilo Zuniga sweep Watford back ahead with his first touch seven minutes from time, and Troy Deeney added a late penalty after Zuniga was fouled by Marouane Fellaini.

Watford caught them cold and started superbly.

I should perhaps preface this piece with a warning; specifically, surprisingly and somewhat contrary to the popular line I’m not going to concentrate on the visitors.

Fran’s report: It feels like the 80s all over again and I never thought I would be able to say that.

Watford fans could have been forgiven for thinking things couldn’t get much better after last week’s extraordinary comeback at West Ham. Well, they just did.

29th October 2011- Championship, Watford 3 Peterborough United 2

Marvin Sordell’s first-half double helped lift Watford out of the Championship relegation zone.

There are three key reasons for the dramatic transformation in both our effectiveness and our watchableness; these will get the first three thunks.  The first was the early goal.  Only at Reading up to now had we got an early goal in a League game, and we hadn’t scored in front of an increasingly irritated and impatient home crowd before the 78th minute before this one.  Here,  particularly with elements of the crowd riled and ready to turn this game felt as if it could be a breaking point.  Mark Yeates’ drilled strike, capitalising on a defensive error but coming on the tail of a neat passing move as we started the game on the front foot, settled nerves, got the crowd square behind the team.

BSAD imageBSAD report: This time last year, we were also drawing 1-1. At home to York City. So, no reason for frowning faces, no reason to dwell for too long on why Sheffield United didn’t become our seventh victims of the season. What we’ve achieved so far isn’t going to be undone by one hideous miss and two dropped points.

BSAD imageBSAD report: Last night Watford used their “Get out of jail free” card, stealing a win in an entirely bewildering game of football. I’m as unsure about how we failed to put the game beyond Oldham’s reach in the first half as I am about how the hell we avoided defeat in the second. This was both a game that we should’ve won by miles and a game that we should’ve lost humiliatingly. If that makes any sense at all.
