WATFORD racked up their fourth consecutive pre-season win – and kept their first clean sheet – with a 4-0 victory over AC Horsens at the start of their training camp in Denmark on Monday, July 31.

A Horsens official was handing out team sheets. Apart from typos for “Cloyd Doyley” and “Dominie Blizzard”, they’d done a good job.

WATFORD turned on the style in the second-half to keep their 100 per cent pre-season record intact with a 5-2 victory at Boreham Wood on Saturday, July 29, but only after surviving a scare.

Borehamwood Times: Two fantastically taken first-half goals from the Boreham Wood striker Darrell Cox stunned Premiership new boys Watford and fired the home side into an unlikely 2-0 half-time lead against a side containing seven first-choice players.

We take up position at the same spot from which we watched much of the same pre-season exchange almost exactly a year ago. The guy on the tannoy seems to be relaying the team news over a mobile phone from the central reservation of the M25; at any rate, he is precious little help in identifying our heroes, although the names “Albert Jarrett”, “Joseph DesirĂ© Job” and Ross Jenkins (yes, really) are just about clear above the crackle. Much of the half, therefore, is spent pondering the identities of the starting eleven, and trying to match ill-remembered images of our younger recent recruits to the individuals in front of us. Dom Blizzard is quickly identified; as last year at Redditch he comes into the first pre-season game looking an absolute monster, not the gangly individual remembered from competitive action.
