Fran’s Watford Blog: I was absolutely gutted at the end of the game.  It was a cruel way to lose, we didn’t deserve that at all.  After a disastrous start to the game and a first 20 minutes when the Hornets had struggled, the lads had done incredibly well to get back in the game and had the better of the second half.  We deserved to come away with at least a point, so the celebrations in the home stands really hurt.  The players were cheered off the field by the travelling Hornets, which was as it should have been.  We have been greatly entertained in most of the games since Cleverley took over and, with such a difficult run of games, have done considerably better than I would have expected.  All we need now is a home win (or two).

BBC: Peterborough moved clear of the relegation zone and struck a blow to their visitors’ automatic promotion hopes with a 3-2 win against Watford. Danny Swanson broke away to score on the half-hour mark before Dwight Gayle doubled Posh’s lead after half-time. Hornets defender Marco Cassetti saw red for hauling down Gayle and Lee Tomlin fired home the resulting free-kick. Watford staged a late comeback with Mark Yeates and Fernando Forestieri both firing in from outside the box.

BHappy: By 3pm, the Moys Terrace was heaving and verging on raucous.  It wasn’t justthe fact that it was a terrace…  a big  game, again, and an agreeable journey had attracted over 4000 travelling supporters.  But there’s nothing quite like an agitated terrace under a low roof and whatever happens as the season closes there’s a part of me that would be perfectly happy in a lower division with terraces – is that wrong?  Hell, there was even an element of nostalgic bravado in revisiting the cramped, inadequate toilet blocks of yesteryear although admittedly that attraction might wane with time…  I faced the queues before kick-off for fear of having to revisit squalor and depravity on a par with Fellows Park, Walsall in 1987 as conditions worsened later on.

This draw ensured our promotion back to (new) Division One. It was the fourth time a Watford side managed by Graham Taylor had been promoted.

So this was a great day out…but it wasn’t quite a promotion day. It was a day of broad grins and jubilant songs, not dips in the High Street pond or drunken debauchery.

The big news before the game was that Hessy wasn’t in the side and instead young David Conolly (he’s only 18 or so – God I feel old) was wearing the number 4 shirt. To be totally honest this had ‘Grim Disaster’ written all over it, especially considering Vale’s recent good form.
