Still takes confidence from ‘completely dominating’ second half against Charlton

BBC: Nestory Irankunda’s emphatic finish earned Watford a point and denied Charlton Athletic a first win in four matches in a chance-laden Championship draw at Vicarage Road.

Sky: Charlton’s Conor Coady was stretchered off being struck in the head by a venomous shot by Tom Ince. The former England international had lengthy treatment on the pitch.

BHappy: Irankunda levels after being released by Louza, a fine, confident, Premier League finish, and then thumps in an evil bouncing bomb that Mannion pushes away. Goglichidze, who’s had an erratic afternoon, gets on the end of a deep cross but heads criminally wide. I can sense Hutch combusting from half the stadium away. Shots are repeatedly fired in but are repelled, most tellingly and representatively when Conor Coady commemorates the 500th appearance of his career by getting in the way of a Tom Ince piledriver. He is knocked out cold interrupting play for a good ten minutes, the incident encapsulating Charlton’s dogged defiance in the face of mounting pressure.

Fran’s Watford Blog: There was applause at the end of the game after a terrific second half in which the Charlton keeper kept them in the game. It was a wonderful attacking performance from the Hornets. Irankunda was immense, running at the defence and hitting great shots. On another day, he would have had a hat trick. Chakvetadze also had a great game. He was unplayable at the start of the second half, constantly running at the Charlton defence and, unlike in previous outings, taking several shots. Long may that last. Nabizada built on his showing against QPR, putting in a very assured performance with no fear of crossing and shooting. I have admired his play in the U18s and U21s, so it is great to see him looking the part in the first team. Due to the extensive injuries, the defence is cobbled together with some square pegs in round holes and Goglichidze in particular had a poor game. I cannot make my mind up about him as he seems to alternate assured performances with absolute mares. In the end it was a game we should have won, but mid-table obscurity now beckons.

From the Rookery End: Jon, Jordi, Mike and Kieran are on presenting duties after Watford’s Easter weekend fixtures — a 1-1 draw at home to Charlton on Easter Monday, coming hot on the heels of the 2-1 defeat away at QPR on Good Friday.

Watford Observer: Paulo Pezzolano on Charlton test: ‘We have to win the fight’

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/live/cgqn9w9pg5nt#Line-ups

Sky: Summer signing Harvey Knibbs scored a stoppage-time winner for Charlton as the Championship new boys made it a losing start for new Watford head coach Paulo Pezzolano.

BBC: The impressive Apter curled a left-footed effort wide in the final few minutes before Watford had a penalty claim turned down in stoppage time when substitute Nestory Irankunda felt he was fouled by goalkeeper Thomas Kaminski..

Where Watford went right and wrong as ‘small details’ cost them at Charlton

BHappy: There were some… euphemistically brave substitution decisions. Irankunda for Baah was a bit weird but then Baah hasn’t done a full 90 since mid-January, was on a yellow and getting increasingly feisty. The withdrawal of Louza in favour of Kayembe in the name of physicality was perhaps the most odd… Edo got as warm a reception as you’d hope and of course decisions are always easier in retrospect and if you’re not the one making them. Nonetheless, Louza’s departure was tantamount to sacrificing possession and inviting pressure… maybe we were better able to defend it, good decisions don’t guarantee good outcomes, but prevention (keep possession) is better than cure (defend set pieces).

Fran’s Watford Blog: As the post-match celebrations on the pitch continued, Baah got involved in some handbags. I wondered what had provoked it until I was told that Jones had celebrated in front of the Watford fans. I wouldn’t have expected anything else, although he had been receiving abuse from the away end throughout the game.

From the Rookery End: As the 2025–26 season got underway for Watford, Jon, Mike, and Kieran headed down to The Valley to watch the Hornets take on Charlton Athletic — only to see them suffer a gut-wrenching defeat to an injury-time goal. With the season’s business now underway, we took the chance to share our first impressions of the new players, the returning faces, and the fresh style of play under Paulo Pezzolano’s guidance.

17th January 2015- Championship, Watford 5 Charlton Athletic 0

Goals: 1  2  3  4  5

Craig Cathcart fired the hosts ahead before Troy Deeney doubled their advantage with a cool finish after Gabriele Angella’s high through ball. Odion Ighalo slotted in from close range just before half-time and later headed in Daniel Tozser’s corner. Tozser himself added a late fifth with a curling, 25-yard free-kick to complete a torrid day for the visitors.

If anything, the margin of defeat flattered the visitors as the Hornets carved out a succession of opportunities and could easily have scored more goals had their finishing been better and Addicks goalkeeper Neil Etheridge not made some fine saves.

Today was a good day.  The sun shone, a beautiful crisp winter’s day which saw early gentle snowfalls melt away, no wind, no bite, a day to grin at the aggressively blue sky.  Vicarage Road looked fabulous in front of its biggest crowd for nearly seven years in – count them – four stands.  “Your Song” rumbled around Vicarage Road before kick-off and, whilst Charlton started quite brightly and the early exchanges suggested a punchy end-to-end encounter it didn’t take long for the game’s pattern to establish itself.  Troy Deeney played a wicked through-ball to release Anya, the Addicks’ defence fell apart like a house of cards, Chris Solly took a yellow by snatching at the escaping wing-back and that was pretty much that.  Our worst performances tend to have been followed directly by defiance like this since Slav’s arrival and Charlton were the fall guys.  This was the bit of being “inconsistent” that is to be enjoyed.  There are worse things than being inconsistent after all…

BBC SportWatford came from a goal behind to secure a draw at home to Charlton, but they remain without a win in their past four matches.

BHappy image report:It’s not a brand new thing, but it’s splendid to hear the subs bench announced and to think “wow, I wish he was playing”.
