100 Greatest Watford Wins- No.3: Watford had blown their chance in the first leg at Vicarage Road. Graham Taylor had said before that match that they would need to take a two-goal lead with them to Bulgaria if they were to have any chance. After a 1-1 draw, the manager subtly qualified that statement, insisting that Watford could score in Sofia. The question was whether they could do enough.

BSAD report: This, like those other Special Watford Nights, was something else. A thing of beauty, a joy forever!

100 greatest

100 Greatest Watford wins- No.7: A fortnight earlier, Watford’s introduction to European football had brought a mild sense of disappointment. The team bore little resemblance to the one that qualified for the Uefa Cup. Luther Blissett, Ross Jenkins and Gerry Armstrong had all gone. Pat Rice’s legs had gone. Ian Bolton was not the same player he had been.  Graham Taylor had no choice but to throw teenagers in at the deep end. The likes of Charlie Palmer, Richard Jobson and Gilligan played in West Germany.
