1st January 2011- Championship, Watford 3 Portsmouth 0 Leave a Reply In-form Watford powered into the Championship play-off positions with an emphatic victory over Portsmouth. For the sake of accuracy and not getting too carried away, we must mention the two chances missed by David Nugent at either end of either half…and things might’ve been different if the first of those, following some rather hesitant defending, had ended up in the top corner rather than the Rookery. But much more typical was what occupied the rest of the ninety minutes: a game that we didn’t chase so much as gently coax, safe in the knowledge that it was ours as long as we didn’t scare it off. https://www.soccerbase.com/matches/results.sd?date=2011-01-01 https://www.11v11.com/league-tables/league-championship/01-january-2011/ Share this:TwitterFacebook
6th November 2010- Championship, Watford 1 Nottingham Forest 1 Leave a Reply Lewis McGugan cancelled out Jordon Mutch’s opener as Watford and Nottingham Forest shared the points. The decision to start with Troy Deeney was only a surprise, if at all, for as long as it took for Jordon Mutch to give us the lead on three minutes. Whilst Camp looks thoroughly competent, the defence in front of him was a shambles every time a high ball came into the box. That we didn’t capitalise was down in part to simply not getting quality in often enough, down in part to luck, and down in part to some rather tolerant refereeing that saw Deeney wrestled away from the ball more than once and the safe option of penalising the striker adopted at both ends. Deeney’s card was marked by a number around us from the kick off, but for me he did a decent job of holding the ball up, linking the play and receiving the ball with his back to goal. Clearly an asset. http://watford.fcdb.info?s=36337&id=4933 Share this:TwitterFacebook
29th September 2009- Championship, Watford 2 Coventry City 3 Leave a Reply http://watford.fcdb.info?id=4879 Coventry striker Leon Best scored twice late on to help his side stage a stirring comeback and beat Watford. This was, of course, what we were always at risk of with our thin and inexperienced squad. The continued absences of Helguson, Demerit and (effectively) Severin deprive us of experience where we have little to spare; the additional absences of Ellington, Jenkins, Cathcart and (ultimately) Hodson left us looking very sparse indeed. But it’s lack of nous that’s the issue really… there’s no way that points should have been dropped from half time onwards against a lamentable Coventry City side. Share this:TwitterFacebook
27th January 2009- Championship, Watford 3 Burnley 0 Leave a Reply Tamas Priskin came off the bench to score a clinical brace as Watford earned a vital Championship win against a very disappointing Burnley. Burnley got off to the worst possible start when McAnuff struck inside the opening minute. Before Saturday, my co-editor suggested that Mr.Rodgers needed to give us something to cling to. Well this wasn’t so much a damp rope to cling to as a luxury yacht with well stocked galley and attentive staff. Wallop! And there was me suggesting that we were doomed with him in charge. Shows how much I know. Why are you still reading this? Evening Standard, 28 Jan 2009 Share this:TwitterFacebook
10th December 2005- Championship, Watford 1 Plymouth Argyle 1 Leave a Reply BSAD report: Around half an hour into the first period, Miles commented that it was “okay so far”. From someone who’s quick enough with a strong opinion, this was a statement so spectacularly radical that it required a serious double-take. Such generosity can only be explained by the festive spirit, or having spent most of the time playing computer games instead of watching properly. Because the first half, while considerably more competent than its counterpart seven days ago, offered the most dour, relentlessly unrewarding football seen at Vicarage Road since the last time that I wrote a sentence like this. It was “okay” only in the sense that nobody died. Share this:TwitterFacebook
