Post Match

It wasn’t a classic and the fans were certainly not missing much by being absent from this one, but the Hornets kept the points tally ticking along this evening to ensure they are still bang in the mix for when, fingers crossed, they can return in some shape of form next month.

City goalkeeper Dan Bentley made the save of the match in the 74th minute, showing great reactions to tip over a shot from Domingos Quina.

Vladimir Ivic’s visitors, who were without three unnamed players who have tested positive for coronavirus, tailed off in the second half as City forward Antoine Semenyo looked the most likely to make something happen.

This was football which deserved to be played behind closed doors. That old Shankly quip about closing the curtains if Everton were playing down the bottom of the garden. But there’s something lurking underneath that too, a sense of how football re-shapes itself when it isn’t so conscious of the public gaze. It’s hard to believe that Bristol City could be quite this cautious in front of a stadium full of their own supporters; unless the opposition is particularly illustrious, and sometimes even then, home fans tend to want to see their team do more than line up in defensive banks. They don’t touch the ball for the first two minutes, content to get their shape and sit tight. In real life, you just can’t do that without a rising restlessness in the stands.

It ended honours even at Bristol City, and while it was level pegging at Ashton Gate, there was a difference of opinion when it came to discussing the performance for the podcast…

Watford condemned Newcastle to a fourth straight defeat with a comfortable away win at St James’ Park.

Watford swept aside an out-of-form Newcastle with a 3-0 victory at St James’ Park in the Premier League on Saturday.

Marco Silva is turning into such a hot managerial property he should probably be handled with oven gloves.

Telegraph

If there is anyone who has failed to grasp why Marco Silva’s reputation as a manager soars, take a look at Watford clinically dismantling Newcastle and pause for a moment to consider how easy they made it look.

How times have changed.  Not just in that we come up to St.James’ Park and win, not just that such a win isn’t a smash and grab or a massive shock in itself, though both of those are remarkable.  The truly monumental thing is that we can come here and not play that well, actually, and win 3-0.

The walk to St James’s Park is all uphill, but that is just the appetiser before the trek up to Level 7.  As we climbed, there were posters warning about the dangers and penalties for pyrotechnics.  One dire warning suggested that you could end up in A&E.  I was concerned that the walk to the gods was more likely to send me there.

The Hornets Nest

As I was travelling home it was revealed that we would be featured first on Match of the Day, an incredibly rare occurrence after a Watford victory.  Unfortunately for me, Newcastle was so far away from my flat that I wouldn’t make it back in time for the start of the show.

Newcastle United 0-3 Watford A back to back wins, back to back clean sheets and back to back Uniteds. In a shorter podcast, another will be out after the Manchester United game, Jon chats to Colin about a a comfortable Watford win, and not just because of the 3-0 score line.

25th November 2001- New Division One, Watford 3 Portsmouth 0

A solid performance by Watford at Vicarage Road ended a poor run of form from Gianluca Vialli’s team.

Nothing of any consequence happens on a Sunday evening. The invention of the wheel, the discovery of penicillin, the abolition of slavery, the introduction of the backpass law…none of them happened while the people involved were lounging around in front of “Monarch Of The Glen”.

25th November 2000- New Division One, Watford v Burnley- Match postponed

About an hour before kick off the heavens opened and the Vicarage Road pitch, which was three years in to its stint of having to cope with Saracens as well as ourselves, was completely deluged.  Shortly after 3pm it was announced the referee had deemed the pitch unplayable.  The rearranged game didn’t take place until April and a new programme was issued.
