19th February 2022- Premier League, Aston Villa 0 Watford 1

WFC.Net Jon Mark’s Goal Commentary: 1

Attendance: 42,000

BBC Sport: Villa dominated but Watford grabbed all three points when Emmanuel Dennis powered home Ismaila Sarr’s 78th-minute cross after an opportunistic counter-attack.

Sky Sports: Imran Louza did well to switch play from left to right as the visitors counterattacked, finding Ismaila Sarr in space on the right edge of the area and the forward then picked out Dennis in the box, with the Nigeria international heading home his ninth goal in 24 games this campaign.

BHappy: If you permit yourself to glance at the fixture list you’ll see reasons for optimism.  The fact remains that we’ve won once in three months and that other corpses around us are stirring too.  This is still a big ask.  But if you were going to set up a great escape you could do worse than plan six of seven remaining home games being against teams in the bottom half.  Not to mention the next two games being against opponents in the same sort of precarious introspection that we found Villa in today.  That guarantees nothing.

19th February 2021- Championship, Watford 2 Derby County 1

BBC Sport: Will Hughes scored against his old club as Watford beat Derby to move third and level on points with second-placed Brentford in the Championship.

Sky Sports: Watford defender William Troost-Ekong turned Nathan Byrne’s cross into his own net to reduce the deficit late on (77), before Byrne’s corner inside the final 10 minutes was kept out by a combination of the woodwork and goalkeeper Daniel Bachmann.

BHappy: Saturday’s startlingly helpful results will have buoyed Hornets’ hearts still further;  Brentford’s recent collapse in particular having looked irresistible a couple of weeks ago perhaps a warning against getting too carried but we look formidable, and at this point of the season with shallower squads than ours suffering badly we have a real opportunity.  Of our first choice eleven only perhaps Hughes and Sarr would be critical misses in isolation.  The momentum is building, the conviction and the energy that we’ve been so badly missing is there, we have the squad and we’re strong all over the pitch.

19th February 1983- FA Cup Fifth Round, Aston Villa 4 Watford 1

http://watford.fcdb.info/index.php?page=matches

The Hornets travelled to Villa Park hoping to prove that they had learnt a lesson from their, previous experiences at the hands of the European champions and, to a degree, they had. But they left knowing that, as the good book says, there is a time for everything.
