31st July 2015- Friendly, Watford 0 Sevilla 1

BHappy imageThe cost of parking at the grammar school has gone up to £8.  Welcome to the Premier League, boys and girls.  Not the only change this… the season’s first rogue vendor is spotted on Vicarage Road selling split Watford / Sevilla scarves (where does his excess stock go, you have to ask yourself) whilst evidence of the ongoing work at the stadium itself is immediately evident, construction vehicles standing guard on the open corner between the Vicarage Road and Elton John stands. A worrying head injury sustained by Ciro Immobile overshadowed Sevilla’s 1-0 friendly win at Watford on Friday.

Mail Online: Sevilla won an early free-kick, knocked into the box by Denis Suarez, but Immobile was involved in a sickening clash with Watford keeper Heurelho Gomes, which saw him needing urgent treatment.

25th July 2015- Friendly, Dundee United 0 Watford 1

Watford have certainly racked up the air miles during their pre-season campaign but, so far, it isn’t affecting their results.

WD Sport: Tannadice Park, located on the east coast of Scotland and casting a shadow over a sprawling vegetable allotment, was the setting for Quique Sanchez Flores’s latest instalment in his ongoing cultivation of a new footballing philosophy at Watford.

19th July 2015- Friendly, SC Paderborn 07 0 Watford 2

The first notable action of the game was Behrami knocking one of the Paderborn players flying.  It was a statement of intent.  Watford took the lead in the 11th minute as Deeney played a lovely through ball for Vydra who hit his shot sweetly past Kruse in the Paderborn goal.

BHappy image Quique Sanchez Flores, for whom a briefer moniker must surely be arrived at pretty damn quickly, looks relaxed and thoroughly Mediterranean in a pale blue shirt.  Actually he looks like a tanned Hugh Laurie, an image that I can’t shake and so will inflict upon you also.  His approach to pre-season friendlies, of which there are an unprecedented-feeling-but-no-I-haven’t-checked eight, this the second, is interesting and doesn’t follow the template that we’re used to.  For one thing, we’ve got competitive opposition four weeks before the start of the campaign;  for another, whilst plenty of players get a run-out this afternoon there’s no mass turnaround at half time as anticipated.

It was a gorgeous day for a football match, even better that the Football Manager Cup between Wimbledon and Watford had been scheduled to coincide with the beer festival.  It seemed appropriate to start the afternoon with a pint of Plough Lane Ale and rather lovely it was too.  To add to the pre-match treats, there was a German würstl stand and, later, an oompah band appeared which started their repertoire with “Staying Alive.”
