16th January 2021- Championship, Watford 2 Huddersfield Town 0

BBC Sport: Second-half goals from Tom Cleverley and Joao Pedro gave Watford a deserved victory over Huddersfield, whose away woes in the Championship continue.

Sky Sports: The midfielder opened the scoring in the 54th minute by charging down Ryan Schofield’s clearance straight into the Terriers’ net, after the goalkeeper had reacted far too slowly to a backpass. Joao Pedro doubled the lead 10 minutes later as the Hornets moved above Reading and into fifth place in the table.

BHappy: The trajectory is positive, even up front, and we’re too good here for a Huddersfield side that, albeit with a stronger eleven themselves and the help of us shooting ourselves in the foot twice, beat us comfortably only a month ago.  Only four surivivors from our starting eleven that day incidentally.

BBC: Doncaster Rovers moved into the top half of the table with a comfortable victory over Watford.

BHappy: It seems somewhat churlish to complain. We knew the limitations that we were operating under this season; Malky Mackay has achieved wondrous things in the circumstances and expectations consequently need to be consciously kept in check. Nonetheless, this was disappointing; a deserved defeat against a tidy enough Donny side, but a Donny side that only ever looked like being put under pressure in the closing minutes.

BSAD: It was a bit of a dour struggle but the finishing from both sides was not the best. We stuck to our guns and managed to smother Wolves in defence, only the slippery and skilful Keane looking as if he could cause us problems.

16th January 1989-FA Cup Third Round Second Replay, Newcastle United 0 Watford 0 (After Extra Time)

Jim Smith’s arrogance leads him to write ‘when we’ve disposed of Watford’ in his programme notes.  He had a gut feeling and it was wrong.  Also Newcastle were obviously so confident of winning that nowhere in the programme is there anything about the possibility of a Third Replay.
