We needed to beat Hull in our final game of the season to guarantee promotion.

The final table looked like this.

This was meant to be the first of two friendly matches between the sides with French side Sochaux due to visit Watford in October. However the home side were unhappy that Graham Taylor told his team to treat it like a two legged game and to play as defensively as possible. Because of this they refused to play the second game.
