27th September 2015- Premier League, Watford 0 Crystal Palace 1

BBC: Crystal Palace moved up to sixth in the Premier League as Yohan Cabaye’s penalty settled a low-key clash against Watford at Vicarage Road.

Sky: It took until the 71st minute for the deadlock to be broken, when Cabaye rifled home from the spot after substitute Wilfried Zaha was brought down just inside the penalty area by Allan Nyom.

ESPN: Despite having plenty of possession, it was not until after the interval that Watford came close to getting on the scoresheet when, after Abdi had been tripped by Joe Ledley, Jose Jurado stepped up and hit a 25-yard free-kick that came back off the crossbar with Wayne Hennessey beaten.

Guardian: As it happened

BHappy: We allow the atmosphere to fuel five minutes’ worth of brash and eager and urgent attacking football, before Palace spoil things by failing to show any signs of panic. Bastards. As the game settles down, it becomes apparent both that we aren’t out of our depth against a team that might well finish in the top half and, at the same time, that there isn’t an awful lot we’re doing that’s scaring them, especially since they’re the away side. It’s an even contest, but one side is more even than the other.

Fran’s Watford Blog: We haven’t faced Palace since the play-off final two years ago and there is a lingering resentment that we were mugged that day.  While Palace’s spoiling tactics made for an unpleasant game, too many of our players didn’t turn up and we didn’t really deserve anything out of the match.  In all honesty, I am delighted that we had a couple more seasons in the Championship and were promoted at a time when we were better prepared for survival in the top division.

19th September 2015- Premier League, Newcastle United 1 Watford 2

BBC: Newcastle’s winless start to the season continued as Odion Ighalo’s double led Watford to a second successive victory.

Sky: The hosts put in an improved display after the break, thanks in part to Daryl Janmaat who halved the deficit shortly after the hour mark. But Watford held on for their first victory at St James’ since 1981, while Steve McClaren’s wait for a first victory as Newcastle manager continues.

ESPN: The Nigeria international struck on 10 and 28 minutes as he took advantage of some pitiful defending to give the promoted Hornets what proved to be a decisive lead.

Fran’s Watford Blog: In the run up to the game, the Newcastle Chronicle had an article which included the paragraph, “Let’s face it, Watford are pygmies living in a land of giants.  They deserve huge credit for achieving what they have, but clubs like Newcastle, with 50,000 fans bellowing them on, ought to sweep them contemptuously aside.”  The words made my blood boil, but meant that Flores didn’t need to dig too deep to get inspiration for the pre-match team talk.

BBC SportOdion Ighalo’s second-half strike earned 10-man Watford their first Premier League victory of the season at the expense of in-form Swansea.

SKY imageThe Nigeria striker, who signed a new five-year deal last week, volleyed home Troy Deeney’s header across the box from a long goal-kick forward on 59 minutes – his second of the campaign.

TelegraphValon Behrami then made life more difficult for Watford than necessary, sent off for a stamp on the surprisingly anonymous André Ayew, but while Swansea struggled to mount a coherent reply, Watford not only adapted to the loss of a player but found enough extra energy to break away three times to come close to a second goal.

BHappy imageMost of all, this didn’t feel like a smash and grab win that a plucky underdog might hope to snaffle a handful of times a season.  Yes, we dropped deep in the dying minutes but there was no desperation, no lack of composure.  We took on a side that has beaten Manchester United, drawn at Chelsea, gotten everyone cooing.  And beat them.  No knocking that.
