Liverpool ended a turbulent week with an emphatic Premiership win at Watford. After two cup exits at home to Arsenal, the under-pressure Reds responded with a fine display, Craig Bellamy scoring the first from Steve Finnan’s cross.

Watford are not so much out of their depth in the Premiership as trying to swim with one foot on the bottom. Such a lot of effort is devoted to keeping heads above water that attempts at progress are slow, painful and, in the case of Saturday’s inept display against Liverpool, downright embarrassing. Adrian Boothroyd’s team will not drown but they will surely return to the Championship paddling pool.

Watford’s manager Aidy Boothroyd had a far more frustrating afternoon. ‘I think that when you play one of the big four, sometimes there’s a choke that goes on,’ he said. ‘They see players that they see a lot on the TV. Sometimes some of them can’t cope with it.’ Boothroyd also revealed that there is now an ‘£8million bid on the table’ for Ashley Young but would not reveal other details.

And the postscript to Friday’s slightly ill-advised article is…Dammit.

BBC: Watford came back from a goal down to avoid an FA Cup upset at the hands of Stockport County.

Guardian: Watford’s teenage striker Moses Ashikodi, signed from Rangers on New Year’s Eve, scored their final goal on Saturday when they came from behind to secure a morale-boosting 4-1 victory against Stockport County. “I am not big-headed or anything but I can score the goals to help us stay up,” he said later.

Should you have room after all those mince pies, the one word match report is: Gusto.

And amid it all, one of the most resourceful and committed team performances that Vicarage Road has seen in recent years, reducing Arsenal’s vastly over-hyped ice-skating-on-grass football to scraps and bits and hilarity. Still lost, I know, but the fight was truly something to behold. When the team needed and deserved our fullest support, a few hundred were crassly bellowing about a country whose history apparently ended in 1945 and distant deeds that they have absolutely no claim over, while the rest of us were shaking our heads in silent disbelief and wishing that the ground would open up. Never has an atmosphere been deflated so quickly without a goal being scored.

Watford squandered the chance to move off the foot of the Premiership and above Charlton, who were thrashed by Spurs, as they were held by Reading.

Boothroyd has been encouraged to hear that Ashley Young has no intention of leaving Watford next month, despite the interest being shown in the 21-year-old midfielder by Arsenal and Aston Villa. On Saturday the makeshift striker struggled to make any impact against the resolute Ibrahima Sonko and Ivar Ingimarsson, and even his fierce 25-yard shot, Watford’s first moment of menace, was saved confidently by Marcus Hahnemann.

Today’s one-word match report is: futile.
