John-Joe O’Toole’s winner after 72 minutes gave new Watford boss Brendon Rodgers a second successive victory

The rain. I’m not complaining; we played the conditions much more effectively than Cov and it was a remarkably positive showing from both sides in the circumstances. But… it didn’t seem likely that the game would finish, as late as the end of the first half. Bonus marks to Chris Coleman for stopping short of Walker (R)’s plausible enough prediction in his post-match comments.

Tommy Smith’s strike earned Watford boss Brendan Rodgers his first win as manager as they saw off Norwich.

The uncharitable might say that Brendan Rodgers owes his first victory as Watford manager to Norwich’s failings rather than his own side’s strengths. Profound frustration made Glenn Roeder a very uncharitable man. And a confused one. “That was daylight robbery,” said Roeder of this night-time joust. “We dominated from start to finish and gifted them two early Christmas presents. Anyone who puts forward a case for Watford deserving to win that match is in fairyland.”

Yeah, I know. A win. Any win. But good god. Norwich were poor, and yet we were fortunate to come away with three points.

QPR’s remarkable victory leaves Watford without a home win since 20 October.

QPR now sit 19th in the Championship, a long way from Watford who, after a seventh home league game without a win, are on the slide. The manager, Aidy Boothroyd, is trying to quell talk of a crisis but the captain, Jay DeMerit, admits the club’s hopes of going straight back into the Premier League are fragile. “We are a little bit nervous at home – it feels as though there is more pressure,” he said. “A team that is near the top of the table should be winning at home. Our jobs aren’t safe; we have to play well in order to keep them.”

Watford started Boxing Day on top of the table yet the growing dissatisfaction around Vicarage Road suggested anything but; by the evening they were second. Jobi McAnuff’s volleyed equaliser, scored so deep into injury-time that the Cardiff City manager, Dave Jones, called foul play, could only paper over the cracks for a side whose home form is rapidly undermining their title credentials.

We remain painfully easy to play against at Vicarage Road, as revealed by yet another committed but mediocre side. A bit of guile in the transfer window, whether permanent or on loan, appears essential.
