24th September 2013- League Cup Third Round, Watford 2 Norwich City 3 (After Extra Time) Leave a Reply Premier League Norwich avoided an upset as Gary Hooper scored late in normal and extra-time on his first start to see off Watford in the Capital One Cup. Javier Acuna’s first Watford goal and Marco Faraoni’s 25-yard effort left Norwich teetering. But substitute Josh Murphy rifled home the game’s third superb goal, and Hooper flicked home Nathan Redmond’s cross in the 95th minute. Johan Elmander went close before Hooper poked in to complete Norwich’s escape. The opening was all anticipation, and the drumrolls were provided by the immediate pressure that Norwich put on us a long way up the pitch. We’ve played City a million times before, this tie had none of the lustre of a Manchester United or a Liverpool… nonetheless, this is a competent top-flight City side, and to see them adopting such an archetypal Championship approach – pressure, pressure, pressure, but with better-than-Championship players – was ominous. http://watford.fcdb.info?id=5078 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2013%E2%80%9314_Football_League_Cup Share this: Share on X (Opens in new window) X Share on Facebook (Opens in new window) Facebook
17th September 2013- Championship, Watford 2 Doncaster Rovers 1 Leave a Reply Lewis McGugan converted a penalty with three minutes remaining to earn Watford a dramatic victory over Doncaster. A late penalty from Lewis McGugan brought Watford a first win in five league matches and sent them surging back into the top six, but the difficulty they had in finding a way past Doncaster offered further proof that last season’s wildly entertaining if ultimately frustrated attempt at promotion will not necessarily segue into a more irresistible upwards surge at their second attempt under Italian ownership. Where we continue to fail, rather too obviously, is in making our possession count for anything much. We’re caught between simple ball retention, knocking it around without much purpose, and trying to penetrate opponents who’ve been afforded the time to get themselves in order. Occasionally, we stumble on what might be a way out of the cul-de-sac: here, Gabriele Angella launched a sublime, far-reaching pass to find an advancing Anya, cutting through the banks of four in an instant. But, inevitably, that simply led to repeated attempts at the same thing with diminishing results, and it wasn’t long before Angella’s missiles harked back to Jay Demerit trying to fulfil childhood dreams of being a quarterback in the Boothroyd years. http://watford.fcdb.info?id=5076 Share this: Share on X (Opens in new window) X Share on Facebook (Opens in new window) Facebook
14th September 2013-Championship, Watford 1 Charlton Athletic 1 Leave a Reply Watford came from a goal behind to secure a draw at home to Charlton, but they remain without a win in their past four matches. report:It’s not a brand new thing, but it’s splendid to hear the subs bench announced and to think “wow, I wish he was playing”. http://watford.fcdb.info?id=5075 Share this: Share on X (Opens in new window) X Share on Facebook (Opens in new window) Facebook
28th August 2013- League Cup Second Round, Watford 2 AFC Bournemouth 0 http://watford.fcdb.info/index.php?page=matches BBC: Elliott Ward diverted the ball into his own net to give Watford the lead and Jonathan Bond tipped Cherries striker Brett Pitman’s free kick onto the post. Andrew Surman saw his header fly just wide while Shaun MacDonald twice went close for the visitors. But Watford sealed victory with Cristian Battocchio chipping Ryan Allsop to finish off a fine break. BHappy: And so the prospect of a second game against the same opponents in such a short space of time is unusually appealing, somewhat intriguing. Bournemouth took a kicking in the latter stages of the league game, but their approach was pretty successful until then, and they might well have squeaked out a lead to defend with more decisive finishing. No need to dig out Plan B just yet. As for us, even with a second-string line-up, there’s enough here to expect some artistry and adventure…. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2013%E2%80%9314_Football_League_Cup Share this: Share on X (Opens in new window) X Share on Facebook (Opens in new window) Facebook
25th August 2013- Championship, Watford 1 Nottingham Forest 1 Leave a Reply http://watford.fcdb.info?id=5072 Nottingham Forest returned to the top of the Championship despite a sweet strike by Watford’s Lewis McGugan denying his former side victory. Watford-1-1-Nottingham-Forest-BBC-SportDownload Both are little men with big ambitions but there the similarity ends. Gianfranco Zola is urbane and mild-mannered, Billy Davies fierce and feisty. And it remains true that teams naturally reflect their managers. The curse of the ex-player came back to haunt Nottingham Forest at Watford, but it could not stop them reclaiming top spot. Forest weathered the sort of second-half fightback that is becoming Watford’s custom and would have had maximum points again but for the high-class save, low to his right, with which Manuel Almunia kept out Ishmael Miller’s goalbound shot. In my head, we always draw one-all with Forest. It’s kind of an unwritten rule. Not strictly true in reality of course; nonetheless a glimpse at the record books reveals ten such outcomes in the last 30 league encounters spanning almost 30 years. It feels as if I’ve seen at least that many. Share this: Share on X (Opens in new window) X Share on Facebook (Opens in new window) Facebook
