25th November 2000- New Division One, Watford v Burnley- Match postponed

About an hour before kick off the heavens opened and the Vicarage Road pitch, which was three years in to its stint of having to cope with Saracens as well as ourselves, was completely deluged.  Shortly after 3pm it was announced the referee had deemed the pitch unplayable.  The rearranged game didn’t take place until April and a new programme was issued.

A few weeks later in Issue 23 of the fanzine ‘The Yellow Experience’ an American fan  told of how he had travelled 5500 miles for the game.

18th November 2000- New Division One, Watford 2 Preston North End 3

Watford slumped to their third successive defeat as Preston completed the double over the two leading clubs in the First Division.

Welcome back to the real First Division. The place where life sometimes kicks you in the teeth. And, if life doesn’t do it, the Tranmere midfield will.

“Not quite crisis time yet” (Radio 5). Thank goodness for that, then.

We played some of our best positive football in ages in this game, our attacking moves were sharp, our finishing strong. And yet we were also offering vacant possession of most of the pitch to any enterprising North Ender who happened along and fancied a piece. At first they tended to happen along three or four a minute, since their industriousness put us to shame. And then, when they saw our shapeless generosity, our lack of stomach for a scrap, they all fancied a piece.

BSAD imageBSAD report: Besides, we’re top of the league. Properly top of the league, not just keeping it warm for Fulham. All the other stuff still matters, of course…but the crap that life throws at you seems to stick less easily when you’ve got a league table to gaze lovingly at.

BSAD imageBSAD report: Today we sing, coz we love our team. They kept out a hard-working bunch of bastards who’d got an inexplicable grudge against us and interrupted our every attempt at complicated passing, which made us look like we either couldn’t get in the game or weren’t trying hard enough to do so.

BSAD imageBSAD report: All teams, including us, will go on a bad run at some stage during the season (as Fulham are demonstrating to a minor extent at the moment). We just have to hope ours won’t last too long, and that it doesn’t happen for a few games yet.

17th October 2000- New Division One, Watford 0 Gillingham 0

BSAD imageI hate Gillingham. In an admiring sort of way.  They’re a pain in the arse, obviously. We haven’t beaten them since the invention of the combustion engine and, on last night’s evidence, we’ll have seen a few more inventions come and go before we beat them again. They know how to make themselves unpopular, that’s for sure.  Perhaps they’ve burst our bubble at an appropriate moment, though.

BSAD imageOn the subject of our forwards, Gifton on an off-night plays depressingly more like a Harlem Globetrotter than Michael Jordan; and with a wall of blue meanies facing them, even Tommy Smith back in a central role couldn’t jinx a way through.
