Watford held to 0-0 draw by Rubin Kazan in Austria pre-season friendly

The Rubin Kazan team lined up wearing the highest numbers that I have ever seen in a football match.  As the captains met for the pre-match formalities, which included swapping pennants, the referee was heard to ask if there was a spare pennant for him.  Deeney dutifully went back to the Watford staff to relay the referee’s request.

Friendlies early into pre-season are almost always arranged to improve fitness but Beppe Sannino won’t be complaining that his side found their shooting boots during this evening’s 7-0 victory over SV Feldkirchen.

5th July 2014- Friendly, SK Austria Klagenfurt 0 Watford 1

Watford Observer Watford opened their pre-season campaign with a 1-0 win at SK Austria Klagenfurt this evening. The only goal of the game came in the 26th minute when a fine pass from Sean Murray put new signing Lloyd Dyer through one-on-one and he duly beat the Klagenfurt keeper

The Klagenfurt announcer, who was wearing a shirt with no 12 on the back (as were all the fans in replica shirts), went through a detailed description of the Klagenfurt players but did not deign to inform us of the Watford line-up, so it was the usual pre-season practice of trying to recognise these young footballers who all look the same to me.

Substitute Danny Ward scored a hat-trick to help Huddersfield Town finish the season on a high and end Watford’s 10-game unbeaten run at Vicarage Road.

The “lap of honour” at the end of the game was peculiar in the extreme.  The stands were… not empty, but not thronging with acclaim as they surely would have been given any kind of performance on the day.  It’s been a disappointing season, given the expectations we went in with… but it’s not been that bad for the most part.  There have been good wins, good performances, and everyone wants to leave happy.  As it was, those that remained were surely largely there for one man only.
