28th August 2013- League Cup Second Round, Watford 2 AFC Bournemouth 0

BBC: Elliott Ward diverted the ball into his own net to give Watford the lead and Jonathan Bond tipped Cherries striker Brett Pitman’s free kick onto the post. Andrew Surman saw his header fly just wide while Shaun MacDonald twice went close for the visitors. But Watford sealed victory with Cristian Battocchio chipping Ryan Allsop to finish off a fine break.

BHappy: And so the prospect of a second game against the same opponents in such a short space of time is unusually appealing, somewhat intriguing. Bournemouth took a kicking in the latter stages of the league game, but their approach was pretty successful until then, and they might well have squeaked out a lead to defend with more decisive finishing. No need to dig out Plan B just yet. As for us, even with a second-string line-up, there’s enough here to expect some artistry and adventure….

BHappy image Even for world-weary types like your correspondent, who prefer their battles hard-fought and their victories without any sense of entitlement, this is terribly hard to resist. It almost feels as if the anticlimax at Wembley didn’t happen; perhaps it was such a non-event, swimming in the spring heat haze, that any memories have simply evaporated and left little trace. What might’ve been a watershed moment just passed quietly into history, and here we are: the old gang, back together for another shot at the big time. Even for world-weary types, it’s a tantalising prospect.

BBC SportWatford won this Carling Cup first-round clash against Bournemouth after extra time at a sombre Vicarage Road.

guardianWatford fans came to pay their respects to Jimmy Davis, who died in a car crash on Saturday, and the football seemed almost irrelevant. But after 108 minutes of stalemate, on came Scott Fitzgerald to slide in at the far post and, with his first touch, settle the tie.

28th April 1998- New Division Two, Watford 2 AFC Bournemouth 1

The game where Steve Palmer wore the number one jersey and started in goal.  He swapped with Alec Chamberlain (who was no.4) after the first few seconds.  In the final fixture away at Fulham Palmer wore the number nine shirt meaning he became the first and only player in Football League history to have worn every number from 1-14 during a season.

Daily Telegraph, 29 Apr 1998

The atmosphere was tremendous throughout, combining encouragement as the team made strides towards the Championship and celebration of what has already achieved. Graham Taylor was indeed having a party and he laid on some fine entertainment – not least, the hilarious appearance of Steve Palmer in goal at kickoff. Palmer’s bid to wear all fourteen shirt numbers in one season now looks unstoppable – he only needs to don the number nine at Fulham on Saturday – and he seemed to enjoy his new role as much as everyone else, grinning widely as the players lined up to take warm-up shots at him while the fans chanted “dodgy keeper”. Richard Johnson belted the ball into touch immediately, allowing Palmer and Chamberlain to swap back to their more accustomed positions. It’s reassuring to see that Graham Taylor hasn’t lost his sense of fun over the years

Stick to your guns, Kenny. Despite the defeat, despite the setback to our promotion aspirations, despite the poor performance, I remain convinced that we’re attempting to do the right thing.
