15th August 2020- Vladimir Ivic appointed Head Coach

From the Official Site: Vladimir Ivić is the new Head Coach of Watford, the club is delighted to confirm.

A two-time league winner as manager of Israel’s Maccabi Tel Aviv, in both 2018/19 and 2019/20, Ivić also led PAOK to Greek Cup glory in 2016/17.

“First of all, from the beginning I have a big expectation of myself and of my coaching staff,” Ivić told watfordfc.com.

“It’s my first time in England and I need to adapt as fast as possible, to do the best for the club is very important to me.”

The 43-year-old has signed a one-year contract, with a further year option held by the Hornets, and will start work with the Hornets’ squad on Monday, alongside his three-strong coaching team.

Ivić added: “I’ve worked with my coaching staff for three years, so I know that we will ask the most from ourselves so we can help the players to achieve the club’s goals.”

Born in the Former Republic of Yugoslavia, the former midfielder represented the country of his birth at Under-21 level as a player before earning full caps for Serbia & Montenegro. At club level, he won the First League of FR Yugoslavia three times with Partizan Belgrade.

BBC: Watford are still waiting for their first Premier League victory since 2007 after they were held to a goalless draw by West Brom. The Hornets dominated the match but could not break through a well-organised West Brom defence.

Sky: Quique Sanchez Flores’ team created numerous chances against Tony Pulis’ men, particularly in the first half of an entertaining game. But Troy Deeney and Odion Ighalo were both among the culprits as they wasted those opportunities and had to settle for a point instead.

Fran’s Watford Blog: We could have won by 3 or 4 goals while West Brom were the epitome of a Pulis side, dour, negative and time-wasting from early in the game. Their large contingent of travelling fans deserved more from them than a performance in which they didn’t have a single shot on target. As I applauded the team off, my disappointment was tempered somewhat when I heard the bloke behind me say “undefeated”. On reflection, it had been another terrific performance from a team that will only get better. It was rather nice, for the second week running, to want to see us on Match of the Day and to hear positive comments from the pundits. Let us hope that is a feature of this season.

Sheffield United eased to victory over Watford as summer signing Ched Evans opened his goal account for the Blades. Jamie Ward had given the hosts an early lead when he drove in a shot after the ball broke to him from a Brian Howard free-kick. Evans wrapped up the win when he skilfully evaded several lunging defenders before rifling home.

Watford defender Williamson headed over the crossbar from a corner and Jobi McAnuff shot high and wide from 25 yards. But moments after Watford summer signing Danny Graham had lifted his shot over the crossbar the home side doubled their lead.

HornbloggerWe seemed to start well but after 12 minutes didn’t defend a simple cross and Jamie Ward, who isn’t much bigger than your average Smurf, easily knocked the ball past Loach. From then on neither the team or the fans seemed to have any belief at all that we’d get back into the game.

The mind boggles at what Watford can achieve this season if they can win games like this. Not so much under the cosh as buried deep beneath it for large periods of the match, the Hornets still managed to eke out a one-nil victory that puts them joint top of the first division, albeit at a stage too early to judge what their eventual league fate will be.

15th August 1992-New Division One, Watford 3 Millwall 1

The top 22 clubs in the country broke away from the Football League to form the Premier League which began on this day.  As a result the Football League renumbered its divisions so whereas in 1991/2 we had been in Division Two we were now in Division One, but were still in the second tier.  To differentiate from what came before I’ve added the word ‘new’ to the Football League divisions we were in from 1992-2004, when they were re-branded and the second tier became known as the Championship.
