Sky: The hosts just could not stop losing the ball in midfield and Manning’s men cashed in with a strike from Cameron Pring and an own goal from Wesley Hoedt to lead at the break.

BBC: Half-time substitute Giorgi Chakvetadze made an immediate impact, pulling a goal back for Watford four minutes after the interval. But Mark Sykes scored a minute later and Andreas Weimann capped a resounding Robins victory by adding a late fourth.

Fran’s Watford Blog: It was a very disappointing showing from the Hornets who struggled to keep hold of the ball and couldn’t control the opposition.  Too often, passes were misplaced or just aimed for a space that was only ever going to be taken up by an opposition player.  Andrews had one of the poorest games that I have seen from him and Asprilla seemed very reluctant to take on the defenders, so their faltering partnership was exploited by City.  It is hard to pick out a good performance although I thought that Healey did well in a game in which he was allowed to make more than his usual cameo appearance.  But the positive that I will take out of the game is that the heads never dropped, and the players continued to attack right to the end, even if it was largely ineffective.  I was pleased that more than one of the people that I spoke to after the game questioned the booing.  I don’t think that the players deserved that after their recent performances. But it was another disappointing Boxing Day.  Let us hope that this is just a blip, and we return to winning ways on Friday.

15th April 2023- Championship, Watford 2 Bristol City 0

WFC.Net Goal Commentary: 1  2

Attendance: 19,148

BBC Sport: The Hornets got off to a great start when Harry Cornick’s own goal gave them a sixth-minute lead, but were grateful to goalkeeper Daniel Bachmann who made a number of first-half saves. City should have levelled early in the second half when Nahki Wells saw an effort saved, but soon after they were 2-0 down thanks Joao Pedro’s powerful effort.

Sky Sports: While the home side rarely looked convincing and saw their woodwork struck twice in the second half, Watford nevertheless still retain a chance of making the play-offs.

BHappy: Earlier in the half, a “Pozzo Out!” banner made its way solemnly along the foot of the Lower GT.  Those responsible, whilst surely not hoping for yet another defeat, might have had mixed emotions at the state of the game and would surely have enjoyed noisier support had the scoreline been reversed.  As it was there was a rumble of appreciation from the Rookery which had died away by the time the banner reached the halfway line.  Indeed, a slightly surreal accompaniment was provided by a youngster behind us who gleefully rolled through the João Pedro “always believe in your soul” song in utter indifference to the dwindling protest to his left as it made a rather painful journey down the north end of the pitch.

Fran’s Watford Blog: Once the teams had been announced, Richard Walker said, “Please put your hands together for former Watford manager and current Bristol City manager, Nigel Pearson.”  The applause for Nigel was very appreciative and it was good to see him wave to the home crowd to acknowledge it.

BBC Sport: Bristol City’s winless run stretched to five games as they fought out a goalless draw with Watford at Ashton Gate. The Robins enjoyed the better of the contest but were unable to find a way past visiting keeper Daniel Bachmann.

Sky Sports: City dominated for long periods without coming up with a finish, while the out-of-sorts visitors went the whole game without registering a shot on target.

BHappy: Shorn of Sarr, João Pedro and Asprilla on top of Louza we lack any verve whatsoever and all the cracks that their presence renders ignorable are painfully exposed.  Those four aren’t… an unfair advantage of course, for all that they are each surely destined to return to playing at the top level with or without Watford.  You’re allowedto have good players. Had we sold Sarr and/or JP over the summer as we surely expected to, we’d have invested in some Polyfilla (other brands are available) to fill some of those cracks.

Fran’s Watford Blog: At half time the City team of 97-98 were welcomed back for the 25th anniversary of the season in which they won promotion to the second tier.  It was a little ill advised to do that when Watford were visiting as our memory of the corresponding tie that season was of the home fans holding up a banner declaring themselves Champions.  Pride went before a fall and it was the Hornets who topped the division that season on our way to the Premier League.  Still, the first person to be introduced to the crowd was the manager that season, the wonderful John Ward, who was given a very warm reception by the travelling Hornets.

13th February 2021- Championship, Watford 6 Bristol City 0

BBC Sport: A stunning first-half performance helped promotion-chasing Watford blow away out-of-form Bristol City at Vicarage Road in the Championship.

Sky Sports: The margin of victory was Watford’s biggest for six years and the clean sheet made it 14 shut-outs for the season.

BHappy: Everything did fall for us though.  I mean, yes, brilliant, wonderful.  6-0, biggest league win since that day in September 1982 when my sister and I spent the evening using up our felt tips on posters depicting the boat sinking on the old Sunderland badge to greet Dad when he got home (Paolo’s first game, he never had a chance….).  But, you know.  If you’re not going to record a comfortable win in these circumstances…

It wasn’t a classic and the fans were certainly not missing much by being absent from this one, but the Hornets kept the points tally ticking along this evening to ensure they are still bang in the mix for when, fingers crossed, they can return in some shape of form next month.

A first clean sheet in eight games and extending a nice little run to one defeat in eight were the big takeaways from this one that will not be featuring very high, if at all, on the end-of-season highlights reel. A point at a side who started and finished the night in third place is not to be sniffed at, particularly in a division that can resemble a game of snakes and ladders at times.

Watford could have won it with a header from Craig Cathcart in the first half or a well-hit one in the second half from Domingos Quina that Daniel Bentley saved superbly. They could also have lost it via a couple of chances in quick succession engineered by Antoine Semenyo, while a corner into the box late on forced Ben Foster into emergency action, so a draw was just about a fair result.

The evening also provided a good first test run of the four-at-the-back formation. It seemed to work well, with the Hornets enjoying plenty of the ball and controlling large parts of the game. It shows they have tactical flexibility, are agile and they should, all things being equal, only get more cohesive and fluent as the games and weeks race by. They’ve still not been anywhere near their best and are within three points of the second automatic spot. Vladimir Ivić could certainly not be accused of not going for it, with Troy Deeney, Stipe Perica and Ismaīla Sarr all in the front line by the end.

Ivić will have been pleased that the first half was more controlled than the free-wheeling first 45 at QPR on Saturday. With one less man at the back and more in midfield to help ball retention, the Hornets enjoyed as much of the ball as they had done in a game all season. They had 88 per cent of it after 10 minutes and that only dropped to 66 per cent at half-time, enabling them to dictate the play with 262 passes to the home side’s 136 and play it at their pace.

They didn’t do a great deal with it, generating five shots on goal without any on target, but the intent was there. James Garner was at the heart of most of what they did well. He fizzed one into Andre Gray that led to a snapshot for Sarr, and sent over four corners of varying danger. He also bent over a free-kick that Cathcart got on the end of with a header. The captain nodded it just wide, but the fact he slammed the post in frustration told you he felt he may have done better.

Quina vowed pre-match to play without any fear and he backed that up, turning and letting fly with one that moved all over the place and landed just wide, and almost putting Gray in with a slide-rule pass. Gray was also a whisker away from playing in João Pedro with a perceptive pass.

Foster did not have a single save to make in the first period, his main job largely to keep warm on a night he would call “fresh”. He still hadn’t been called into action by the hour mark, but would have been mighty relieved when Semenyo, after fine work down the left, fizzed one through the legs of Famara Diédhiou instead of straight into his path as the striker was four yards out and poised to score the easiest goal of his career. The lively Semenyo was posing City’s biggest threat and he nearly steered one into the far corner soon after.

The momentum was slowly shifting the home side’s way so Ivić responded by sending for Deeney, who has a track record of changing the course of a game, often through the sheer force of his personality. It was probably no coincidence that his presence resulted in the first shot on target in the game, Quina letting fly with one that dropped his way just inside the box. Bentley did superbly to tip it over and it was really travelling and would have rattled the back of the net.

Foster responded with some agility of his own right at the end to preserve a point. Anything less wouldn’t have been fair. Neither would anything more.

City goalkeeper Dan Bentley made the save of the match in the 74th minute, showing great reactions to tip over a shot from Domingos Quina.

Vladimir Ivic’s visitors, who were without three unnamed players who have tested positive for coronavirus, tailed off in the second half as City forward Antoine Semenyo looked the most likely to make something happen.

This was football which deserved to be played behind closed doors. That old Shankly quip about closing the curtains if Everton were playing down the bottom of the garden. But there’s something lurking underneath that too, a sense of how football re-shapes itself when it isn’t so conscious of the public gaze. It’s hard to believe that Bristol City could be quite this cautious in front of a stadium full of their own supporters; unless the opposition is particularly illustrious, and sometimes even then, home fans tend to want to see their team do more than line up in defensive banks. They don’t touch the ball for the first two minutes, content to get their shape and sit tight. In real life, you just can’t do that without a rising restlessness in the stands.
