16th March 2002- New Division One, Watford 3 Coventry City 0 Leave a Reply Went off half time 2-0 up after another headed goal from Brown having dominated the first half. Mahon, in particular, had been a star in defence but, on the rare occasion that the boyz had given, or lost the ball, they went looking for it as unit, and worked very, very hard. Delightful stuff. Still, let’s enjoy it. Sure, the scoreline gives little indication of what a hard-fought contest this was, nor that there were periods when Coventry were clearly on top. Until the third goal went in, we were never comfortable. That’s a good thing, though. We need challenges right now, we need to be tested, we want to get into the habit of meeting opponents head-on rather than hiding away. Just as we’d imagined that we’d seen all that Luca Vialli’s Watford had to offer – some gorgeous football, made mediocre by limp performances and stupid results – it has revealed a darker, more threatening side. A First Division mentality, if you like. A winning mentality, certainly. https://www.soccerbase.com/matches/results.sd?date=2002-03-16 https://www.11v11.com/league-tables/league-division-1/16-march-2002/ Share this: Share on X (Opens in new window) X Share on Facebook (Opens in new window) Facebook
14th May 2000- Premier League, Watford 1 Coventry City 0 Leave a Reply http://watford.fcdb.info?id=4401 BSAD report: Like us, Coventry came to enjoy themselves. Their last chance for an away win brought their fans out in force and they contributed fully to a tremendous pre-match atmosphere. Robert Page received his “Player of the Season” trophy to a huge ovation, and both he and Haig Oundjian paid tribute to the supporters who have done the club proud in recent months. Following a earth-shaking, immense “ELTON JOHN’S TAYLOR-MADE ARMY” session, the team emerged from the tunnel into bright May sunshine for its final Premiership appearance…. https://oldwatford.com/2016/05/15/15th-may-2016-premier-league-watford-2-sunderland-2-2/ Daily Mirror, 15 May 2000 Share this: Share on X (Opens in new window) X Share on Facebook (Opens in new window) Facebook
31st October 1999- Premier League, Coventry City 4 Watford 0 http://watford.fcdb.info/index.php?page=matches BBC: Teenage star Robbie Keane inspired Coventry to a thumping victory at Highfield Road to increase Watford’s relegation fears. Daily Telegraph, 1 Nov 1999 Guardian, 1 Nov 1999 Daily Mirror, 1 Nov 1999 BSAD: Doesn’t May 31st seem a long time ago? There’ll be many to whom this sort of result isn’t really a surprise. Watford were always supposed to struggle, of course. When you bear in mind that the vast majority of the squad, including the more recent arrivals, were playing Second Division football two seasons ago, and that this same squad has been decimated by injury and further mocked by cruelly coincidental suspensions, a scoreline like this is almost inevitable.
