Domingos Quina: Watford midfielder praised after impressive full debut at Everton

Lucas Digne’s injury-time free-kick earned Everton a point and denied Watford what would have been a sweet victory over former manager Marco Silva.

Abdoulaye Doucoure looked to have headed the winner after Seamus Coleman’s own goal cancelled out Richarlison’s opener against his old club.  Gylfi Sigurdsson then missed a penalty for the second time this season but Watford were denied their first win at Goodison Park as Digne opened his account for the Toffees with a sumptuous effort in stoppage-time.

Watford fans brought inflatable snakes to taunt Marco Silva but the surest way to torment their former manager lay in the club’s first victory at Everton. It was in their grasp until stoppage time, deservedly so, only for Lucas Digne to produce an antidote for Silva and Everton’s self-inflicted suffering.

“I didn’t see anything,” said the Portuguese. “It is not important to me.” But neither time nor the authorities have healed Watford’s wounds. The club’s complaint to the Premier League about what they think was an illegal approach remains unresolved and while Everton had attempted to repair relations by paying what they felt was over the odds for Richarlison, his £40 million fee now looks money well spent.

As we entered through the turnstiles, we were greeted by Dave Messenger who was handing out vouchers for £10 for food and drink.  A really lovely gesture from the club to reward those who had made the journey to Liverpool on a Monday night.  The smallish crowd meant that it was like the old days in the away stand, with us able to take any seat we wanted.  So we headed to an empty section further back where we could stretch out and move about in comfort.  Bliss!

If the away end was loud after the second goal, it was ten times louder now as the game entered the final ten minutes.  I felt physically sick as the Fourth Official held up his board to show six minutes of additional time to be played.  Watford were doing well, winning the ball back comfortably and running the clock down at any chance they could.  As the game entered the final minute, a lofted ball towards the Watford goal was handled by Kabasele as he failed to make the header. As soon as the free kick was given myself and all the other Watford fans around me knew what was coming.

skyTroy Deeney struck late as Watford secured a 1-0 win against Everton in the Premier League at Vicarage Road on Saturday.

BBC SportCaptain Deeney smashed a shot into the roof of the net – his first goal from open play all season – to help the Hornets crawl six points above the bottom three.

guardianBlunt as ever, Troy Deeney described this match as “pretty dire”. That may have been something of an exaggeration but it was not wholly inaccurate – yet ultimately this was an occasion to savour for Watford’s captain.

TelegraphWatford may have got over Marco Silva pretty quickly, but, on this evidence, Everton might still hanker over the manager they had been prepared to pay £10million for.

BHappy imageAny sense of blood and thunder and scores to be settled was short lived. The teams arrived to a particularly densely packed wall of flags in the Rookery and an unexpected cannonfire of yellow and black streamers from the base of the stand. Briefly this had the desired effect as the crowd roared the Hornets on, until it became clear that said streamers had been fired with sufficient welly to reach and entangle themselves into the hooks and anchors in the ceiling of the stand which has never received more attention during a game as the tendrils of streamers blowing in the wind provided an unusual frame to the action, a garish new Instagram filter for the rest of the evening.

FranIt had been a remarkably dull game with most of the excitement of the first half deriving from having to fight off streamers that had detached themselves from the roof.

The Hornets Nest Absolutely nothing happened in the first half.  Complete naff all.  It was so bad that I felt sorry for the pundits and editors of highlight shows who had to desperately search for something to talk about and show.

BBC SportEverton held on to earn their first win under caretaker boss David Unsworth as Watford threw away a two-goal lead and Tom Cleverley missed an injury-time penalty for the visitors.

skyGoals from Oumar Niasse, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Leighton Baines saw Everton come back from two goals down to beat Watford 3-2 in a dramatic contest at Goodison Park.

guardianDavid Unsworth may not land the Everton manager’s job he craves but he will never receive a better endorsement of his ability to generate spirit and fight in a team than what transpired on a truly remarkable evening at Goodison Park. The first win of his temporary reign came with passion, pandemonium, a 91st-minute penalty and a 100th-minute penalty miss. “I need a lie down,” said Unsworth after a breathless encounter in which Everton refused to do exactly that.

TelegraphFootball is a thrilling, perplexing and, sometimes, utterly stupid sport. Those who run it will tell you they follow choreographed patterns, meticulously planning every decision. Then you witness games like this and destinies are determined in the most implausible circumstances, careers elevated or diminished with strokes of fortune.

FranAfter taking our seats, I was rather perturbed to see a man in a Sparta Prague hat a couple of rows behind me.  Talk about a bad omen.  I fixed him with a very cross stare, but he remained oblivious.

The Hornets NestThe pre-match talk was dominated not by team news, but by my horrendous record watching Watford in the north west of England.

EVERTON 3-2 WATFORD How did we not win that game? Jon, Mike, DCW and Jordi talk through the game and well fell more than deflated. The Hornets were cruising at 2-0, but some how lost the game and missed a last minute penalty!!

BBC Sport Ross Barkley’s goal settled Everton’s meeting with Watford after the build-up to the match was dominated by uncertainty over the midfielder’s Goodison Park future.

sky Ross Barkley brushed aside speculation about his future to fire in Everton’s winner in their 1-0 victory at home to Watford on Friday night.

TelegraphWatford were more ambitious than of late with Stefano Okaka’s considerable presence causing a tremor each time he ran at Phil Jagielka.  Wing back Jose Holebas also enjoyed himself against Mason Holgate and expected more when tricking his way down the left wing and delivering a cross demanding a thudding header from Adrian Mariappa from six yards. The defender did not oblige and ball rebounded harmlessly over Joel Robles crossbar.

guardian Ronald Koeman had demanded a show of responsibility from Ross Barkley and the Everton midfielder obliged at Goodison Park: not with the requested decision on his future but with a match-winning display against Watford.

Independent Daryl Janmaat’s early shot was deflected behind off Ashley Williams for a corner and Troy Deeney’s low drive into the Everton six-yard area caused momentary panic. Stefano Okaka was then, inexplicably, allowed the space to pick up the ball on the halfway line and advance to the edge of the Everton area before unleashing a shot that flew just off target.

The Hornets Nest A Friday night in Liverpool? The luxury lifestyle of a football fan!  Although at first glance a Friday night game may have been seen as an inconvenience, we should be thankful, as this gives us all the free time we need to enjoy the greatest night of the year, Eurovision!

Arouna Kone’s late equaliser earned Everton a point at home to Premier League newcomers Watford.  Mexican Miguel Layun fired Watford ahead on the half-volley in the first half after Everton failed to clear.

sky

Substitute Arouna Kone’s late equaliser earned Everton a 2-2 draw and spoiled Watford’s hopes of a fairytale win on their return to the Premier League at Goodison Park.

Telegraph

When referee Mike Jones blew the half time whistle, the booing inside Goodison Park was so thunderous that the stadium’s public address system was activated to full blast immediately; the noise on the terraces being masked by One Direction, a noise of a very different kind.

Watford are up and running in the Premier League after a high-intensity display of commitment and organisation saw them twice lead at Everton only to be pegged back on both occasions in a stirring 2-2 draw at Goodison Park.

The old “will take time to gel” thing drifts from being a source of concern to a reason to be excited in the wake of the opening fixture. Because there were deficiencies, several of them actually, and yet we went and got a result despite them in a challenging away game, twice taking the lead in the process.

There was some disappointment among some Watford fans that we had twice surrendered the lead. Others, me included, felt that we would have bitten hands off if offered a draw at the start of the game. We met a number of Toffees fans on our journey back to the city centre who were very complimentary about our performance and scathing of theirs. Most Watford fans were impressed with our strong showing and the quality of our new signings. Quique has promised us a surprise in each game. I am not sure that will be good for my blood pressure or my sanity, but I am intrigued to see how he will set up at home. So far, so good and I am really looking forward to the rest of the season.
