BBC Sport Watford are a Wembley win away from a return to the top flight they left 11 years ago after a dramatic spot-kick win at St Andrew’s.

BSAD image Last night is incomprehensible, even with the aid of a notebook. Just absolutely gargantuan. My brain is currently refusing to process all the information for fear of overload, but my heart knows the score. Which is probably why I nearly started crying when we appeared on the news this morning – one of those moments when realisation hits, and you can do nothing but crumple. This may not be the most coherent report I’ve ever written.

The game that started the run in to the playoffs. Just look how far behind Wolves we were in the table even after this game.

BSAD report: Renowned literary academic AC Bradley once wrote of Shakespeare’s “King Lear” that it is “too huge for the stage”. In other words, attempting to squeeze such an absolutely immense, overwhelming spectacle – storms, insanity, rage, evil, revenge, forgiveness, redemption – into a theatre is like trying to trap a hurricane in a matchbox.

You could say much the same of the concluding twenty minutes of Watford versus Tranmere. “Too huge for a football pitch” – lawless carnage that refused to recognise the touchline as any kind of barrier, spilling over into the dugouts, the dressing rooms, and the stands.

2nd May 1998- New Division Two, Fulham 1 Watford 2

We went into this game in second place on goal difference so to win the title we needed a better result than Bristol City. They lost 2-1 at Preston and so we were Division Two Champions.

BSAD report:It’s having to start to write reports like this which make you long for a word which can reproduce the sound which those present in the Oak Road End at Kenilworth Road made on Saturday 4th October 1997 after Peter Kennedy slammed home our fourth goal.

BSAD report:In a twinkling of an eye, the past ten years was forgotten, consigned to the history books as meaningless statistics on a page. All of a sudden what mattered was Luton on an October afternoon and a mighty Watford team.

5th April 1994- New Division One, Peterborough United 3 Watford 4

Daily Telegraph, 6 Apr 1994

Peterborough had been in deep trouble all season and, by the time this fixture at London Road came along, it was clear that whichever side lost would go down. Clap Your Hands summed it up simply enough – ‘you HAVE to be there, no excuses’. On the night, it seemed that about half of Watford had travelled to roar on the ‘Orns. Defeat was absolutely unthinkable.

BSAD imageBSAD report: At the time, Bolton were in one of their “riding high in Division 1” seasons, as opposed to a relegation dogfight in the Premier League. Typically for those years, we were skulking around near the bottom of the table, ultimately securing survival only in late-April, on the back of the Mooney/Bailey/Foster/Millen signings, which suddenly transformed the season.
