WFC.Net goal commentary: 1

Sky: Andre Breitenreiter got off to a winning start as Huddersfield boss thanks to Danny Ward’s brace from the bench, which gave the visitors a 2-1 victory after Emmanuel Dennis had opened the scoring for Watford.

BBC: With the home faithful getting restless, Ismael made a double change after just 26 minutes with Tom Ince and Giorgi Chakvetadze brought off the bench.

Ismael points at mentality: it was nothing physical, technical or tactical

Ismael discusses if he thinks he made mistakes – and Andrews on the bench again

Does Ismael fear the sack? Did he understand the boos at Vicarage Road?

BHappy: For the first time this season we’ve stopped looking like a team, and if it’s difficult to quiet the whisper at the back of the mind suggesting that this might have been on the cards as soon as Dennis came back, there’s no doubt that Val is now under pressure.  How this pans out will shed light on the permanence of our commitment to a little bit more patience with bumps in the road, but given the poisonous air to yesterday’s performance I must confess to a degree of concern that events might have overtaken me before I got to the end of this report.

Fran’s Watford Blog: There was 8 minutes of added time for those who were still inside Vicarage Road.  It was largely devoid of incident apart from when Martins played a lovely through ball for Andrews whose low cross was easily gathered by Nicholls.  So, the Hornets fell to a poor defeat against a struggling side and those that were still in the ground let the players know what they thought about the performance. A number of the players headed straight back to the dressing room, but Hoedt rounded up those that he could and told them to applaud the fans.  He looked furious.

24th February 2021- Championship, Blackburn Rovers 2 Watford 3

BBC Sport: The game came to life in 10 first-half minutes as Joao Pedro lifted the ball over Thomas Kaminski to give the Hornets the lead before Ismaila Sarr scored from close range five minutes later.

Sky Sports: Harvey Elliott spectacularly gave Blackburn hope before the break, but the Hornets regained control just after the hour through Ken Sema’s pinpoint finish. Ben Brereton made it a nervy finish but Watford should have had the game sewn up by that point, with Sarr thwarted by Thomas Kaminski, and one cleared off the line at 3-1.

BHappy: The evening was pretty brutal all round.  It was hammering down with rain on a heavy, tatty-looking pitch.  Blackburn were on the back of a four-match losing streak and missing players.  We, of course, are also missing players… Foster, Kabasele, Chalobah, Deeney is at the very least a respectable spine for a Championship side.  This is the point in the season where the depth of our squad ought to tell.

skyTroy Deeney struck late as Watford secured a 1-0 win against Everton in the Premier League at Vicarage Road on Saturday.

BBC SportCaptain Deeney smashed a shot into the roof of the net – his first goal from open play all season – to help the Hornets crawl six points above the bottom three.

guardianBlunt as ever, Troy Deeney described this match as “pretty dire”. That may have been something of an exaggeration but it was not wholly inaccurate – yet ultimately this was an occasion to savour for Watford’s captain.

BHappy imageAny sense of blood and thunder and scores to be settled was short lived. The teams arrived to a particularly densely packed wall of flags in the Rookery and an unexpected cannonfire of yellow and black streamers from the base of the stand. Briefly this had the desired effect as the crowd roared the Hornets on, until it became clear that said streamers had been fired with sufficient welly to reach and entangle themselves into the hooks and anchors in the ceiling of the stand which has never received more attention during a game as the tendrils of streamers blowing in the wind provided an unusual frame to the action, a garish new Instagram filter for the rest of the evening.

FranIt had been a remarkably dull game with most of the excitement of the first half deriving from having to fight off streamers that had detached themselves from the roof.

24th February 2015- Championship, Watford 3 Rotherham United 0

WFC.Net Goal Commentary: 1  2  3

BBC: Watford maintained their bid for automatic promotion as Odion Ighalo scored twice in a comprehensive win over struggling Rotherham.

Sky: Odion Ighalo continued his superb run of scoring form with another two goals while strike partner Troy Deeney also netted as the Hornets remained six points behind leaders Derby.

BHappy: So it was a curious game, except that curious makes it sound interesting and it really wasn’t that. It was curious in the sense that we’d done almost nothing to earn our half-time lead, basically just sitting in our own half and watching the enemy through binoculars until their sentry fell asleep. Aside from a Deeney snap-shot, our openings were entirely of Rotherham’s making, a defender falling over and a clearance rebounding back into the penalty area. We were set up to be a brick wall, albeit one which still managed to allow Arnason a completely free header from a corner for what should’ve been a prompt equaliser. That might’ve changed things. If you’re going to play a formation as miserable as this one, you’d really better not screw it up. As it was, the grumbling was mainly concentrated on the inability of either of our makeshift full-backs to take a proper throw-in.

Fran’s Watford Blog: There was much complaining after the game because, convincing as the win had been, it was the dullest 3-0 imaginable.  The way the team had been set up meant there was no width and little free-flowing football.  Still a win is a win, the goal difference is improved and it is very tight at the top of the table.  Sometimes dull is good.

24th February 2007- Premier League, Watford 0 Everton 3

Everton romped to victory to keep their push for the Uefa Cup on course and leave Watford in desperate trouble.

Three successive home matches offered Aidy Boothroyd’s side a genuine opportunity to close the gap on the teams immediately above them. But the failure to overcome 10-man Wigan in midweek, followed by this setback, suggests the chance has been lost. Although there is still Charlton to come next Saturday, Watford have that sinking feeling.

Boothroyd must already be examining Plan B – the one to take Watford back up next season. Goals will come easier in the Championship. Some will surely fall to the Hungarian forward Tamas Priskin, the second-half substitute who deserved one for effort alone after a shot and two headers in the space of five minutes.

24th February 2001- New Division One, Watford 2 Stockport County 2

Promotion-chasing Watford suffered a major setback to their hopes against Stockport County at Vicarage Road.

This, my friends, was woeful.

GT is right to question their attitudes, and is realistic about the need for new players. Good. I’m plain insulted by this lot. In the old days, when we were good we were good. And when we were bad we were bad. But now when we could be good, we’re worse, and that’s just too much to bear.
