This was an emotional day for those in Watford’s goal. Ben Foster played the final game of his two season loan spell from Manchester United. He was substituted in the 90th minute for Alec Chamberlain who came on for the last game in a career that spanned 25 years and 678 appearances, over 250 of them for Watford. The one minute cameo made Alec the second oldest Premier League player ever at 42 years 327 days only beaten by Manchester City’s John Rudge who was 43 when he played for them in 1995. Alec continued to work at Vicarage Road as a goalkeeper coach until 2017. Ben Foster, of course, would return to Watford in 2018.

Watford became the first team to be relegated from the Premiership this season after drawing with Manchester City at Vicarage Road.

Watford manager Aidy Boothroyd admitted his team ‘did not have enough’ after today’s 1-1 draw with Manchester City meant they were relegated to the Championship.

Everton romped to victory to keep their push for the Uefa Cup on course and leave Watford in desperate trouble.

Three successive home matches offered Aidy Boothroyd’s side a genuine opportunity to close the gap on the teams immediately above them. But the failure to overcome 10-man Wigan in midweek, followed by this setback, suggests the chance has been lost. Although there is still Charlton to come next Saturday, Watford have that sinking feeling.

Boothroyd must already be examining Plan B – the one to take Watford back up next season. Goals will come easier in the Championship. Some will surely fall to the Hungarian forward Tamas Priskin, the second-half substitute who deserved one for effort alone after a shot and two headers in the space of five minutes.

An extremely unusual event preceded Watford’s Premiership match with Wigan on Wednesday. Minutes before kick-off injured Watford striker Marlon King wandered on to the Vicarage Road pitch and, microphone in hand, made an impassioned appeal to the club’s supporters.

Nicolas Anelka’s second-half strike was enough for Bolton to battle past bottom side Watford at Vicarage Road.

Rotherham is not an obvious place to dig for salvation in the Premiership. They are bottom of League One. But last month’s recruits, Will Hoskins and Lee Williamson, did not look out of place in Watford’s colours. It said as much about their new club as the normally voluble Aidy Boothroyd could manage afterwards.

At the finale, two men in black overcoats stood on the sidelines. Neither exuded happiness, but Sam Allardyce at least could claim relief, having bagged his first win in five weeks. After a triumphant December yielded a manager-of-the-month award and five straight league wins, a dreadful January ensued for the Bolton manager with just two points in four games. And Vicarage Road was hardly a popular destination for Bolton, 12 visits had previously brought just one win. For Aidy Boothroyd’s side, a win, as always, was needed. There were the eight new signings to justify and the small matter of scraping the side off the bottom of the table. Preceding the midweek Manchester United whipping, Watford had managed two wins on the trot and were hoping to continue their handiwork.

BBC: Jay DeMerit’s header sank Blackburn to give rock-bottom Watford only their second Premiership win of the season.

Guardian: The odds are that, in the greater scheme of things, this will make no difference, but you could hardly blame the supporters of Watford FC for living for the moment. Long and loud were the celebrations after their second league win of the season, and the most satisfying thing must have been how thoroughly deserved it was.
