26th December 2006- Premier League, Watford 1 Arsenal 2 Leave a Reply http://watford.fcdb.info?id=4737 Arsenal moved third in the Premiership thanks to a late Robin van Persie winner at a heartbroken Watford BBC-SPORT-_-Football-_-Premiership-_-Watford-1-2-ArsenalDownload Should you have room after all those mince pies, the one word match report is: Gusto. And amid it all, one of the most resourceful and committed team performances that Vicarage Road has seen in recent years, reducing Arsenal’s vastly over-hyped ice-skating-on-grass football to scraps and bits and hilarity. Still lost, I know, but the fight was truly something to behold. When the team needed and deserved our fullest support, a few hundred were crassly bellowing about a country whose history apparently ended in 1945 and distant deeds that they have absolutely no claim over, while the rest of us were shaking our heads in silent disbelief and wishing that the ground would open up. Never has an atmosphere been deflated so quickly without a goal being scored. https://www.soccerbase.com/matches/results.sd?date=2006-12-26 https://www.11v11.com/league-tables/premier-league/26-december-2006/ Share this: Share on X (Opens in new window) X Share on Facebook (Opens in new window) Facebook
9th December 2006- Premier League, Watford 0 Reading 0 Leave a Reply Watford squandered the chance to move off the foot of the Premiership and above Charlton, who were thrashed by Spurs, as they were held by Reading. Boothroyd has been encouraged to hear that Ashley Young has no intention of leaving Watford next month, despite the interest being shown in the 21-year-old midfielder by Arsenal and Aston Villa. On Saturday the makeshift striker struggled to make any impact against the resolute Ibrahima Sonko and Ivar Ingimarsson, and even his fierce 25-yard shot, Watford’s first moment of menace, was saved confidently by Marcus Hahnemann. 28th October 2006- Premier League, Watford 0 Tottenham Hotspur 0 Leave a Reply Watford remained winless in 10 league games after a lively, goalless draw against Tottenham at Vicarage Road. Some games are all about ifs and buts, and this was a good example. If the referee’s assistant had not disallowed what looked on re-inspection like a fair goal from Ashley Young four minutes before half-time for offside, Watford might have gained the first win of their new Premiership life. Or indeed, if the excellent Tommy Smith had been able to nudge an incoming cross under rather than over the bar from six yards out when it came to him in the first minute. 2nd October 2006- Premier League, Watford 3 Fulham 3 Leave a Reply Ashley Young’s dramatic late volley salvaged a point for Watford after an extraordinary climax at Vicarage Road. Watford had looked on course for a much-needed first Premiership win of the season, and an escape from the relegation zone, when they led 2-0 with only 19 minutes remaining, but nerves got the better of them and they were eventually thankful for Ashley Young’s late equaliser after conceding three goals in a nightmarish 16-minute period in the second half. 16th September 2006- Premier League, Watford 0 Aston Villa 0 Leave a Reply Watford keeper Ben Foster and his Aston Villa counterpart Thomas Sorensen stole the show as their two sides had to settle for a draw at Vicarage Road. Aidy Boothroyd’s team are still confronting the Watford gap. It is a daunting prospect, despite the manager’s protestation that “performance-wise we’d be near the top of the Premiership. And I believe performances lead to results.” Saturday’s one-word match report is : Thunk. http://watford.fcdb.info?id=4720 Share this: Share on X (Opens in new window) X Share on Facebook (Opens in new window) Facebook
