9th April 2005- Championship, Watford 1 Leeds United 2

BSAD report: I was there, obviously. But less so, much less so. That’s not to suggest that I didn’t fully appreciate that this was a vital match for Watford Football Club, nor that I didn’t applaud a courageous, occasionally inspired, and much less deeply flawed team performance that rose to the occasion and deserved to take more from it than mere encouragement. I saw it all, with nose pressed up against the glass, conscious of everything and yet not part of it. When we scored, I heard myself saying “Yes!” and felt myself rising to my feet; the instincts that would’ve done those things in a reactive blur don’t seem to be working properly. I saw it all, and felt only echoes, remote tremors.

Why? I don’t know. This is new to me, all new. What I do know is that, like so many amazing things that happen in football stadia, the total support demanded by Graham Simpson requires the suspension of disbelief. It needs the conjuring up of an “us” from so much that has so little in common; an “us” that encompasses the stands, the dressing room and the directors’ box to become a football club rather than just a PLC with employees and customers. But you can’t put all of that on hold for three weeks – three weeks of exercising absolute power and authority, of claiming leadership, of seizing complete responsibility – then expect to resume where you left off. “Us” is for fifty-two weeks of the year, or not at all. And you can’t generate genuine belief in a long-term plan for survival and eventual prosperity, then demand the same belief in a new approach when you suddenly change your mind.

Newly-promoted Norwich moved another step closer to clinching the Division One title with goals from Damien Francis and Leon McKenzie. Debutant Dominic Blizzard set up a tense finale with a late header that ended Norwich’s 401-minute shut-out.

They didn’t know whether to celebrate or to worry. There were nearly 5,000 Norwich fans here, another 6,000 watching a beam-back at Carrow Road and more than 3,000 had turned up to watch a midweek reserve game and listen to the closing minutes of Crystal Palace’s victory over Sunderland that had confirmed City’s promotion to the Premiership.

So, this was someone else’s day. Appropriately, it was largely someone else’s game too…which isn’t to say that we were massively outclassed, merely that only the last ten or fifteen minutes suggested that the result wasn’t an inevitability. A bit of a disappointment, then, for it would’ve been lovely to have kept this little run going, building up some proper momentum at last. In the end, we’ll just have to be content with the knowledge that this could really have mattered, and hurt.

Whatever the reason, and they alone know, WFC have only got into gear in the second half of the last three games they’ve played.

For once, the league table doesn’t lie. Following our ascent into a perfect mid-point in Division One on the back of this victory, we’re exactly where we should be.

Promotion-chasing Watford suffered a major setback to their hopes against Stockport County at Vicarage Road.

This, my friends, was woeful.

GT is right to question their attitudes, and is realistic about the need for new players. Good. I’m plain insulted by this lot. In the old days, when we were good we were good. And when we were bad we were bad. But now when we could be good, we’re worse, and that’s just too much to bear.
