report: I resent the loss of midweek games, the loss of that looking forward to a week of work being interrupted by this nugget of excitement (or Rotherham at home, whatever) simply to accommodate Manchester United (for example) losing to some Danish team in a bloated competition that will give them plenty of second chances anyway.

A very poor Hull City visited Vicarage Road and gave Jon, Jason and Mike plenty to talk about. That and a certain forged letter make it another one of those fun weeks to be a Watford fan. COME ON YOU ORNS!

report:There is always something special about the sense of anticipation in a pre-match crowd.  Also, as it was Watford playing Hull, there was neither a ticket tout nor a half-and-half scarf anywhere to be seen.

23rd October 2001- New Division One, Watford 1 Nottingham Forest 2

Nottingham Forest ended Watford’s recent good run, moving up to eighth in Division One after their win at Vicarage Road.

If we learnt anything from yesterday, it was that our league position doesn’t lie. As our recent victories have demonstrated, we’re much, much better than the teams who’ll be struggling against relegation in May. As last night showed rather starkly, we’re still some way behind the division’s best sides.

26th September 1998- New Division One, Watford 1 Ipswich Town 0

BSAD imageOn this occasion, facing arguably the most potent forward line in the division, we stared defeat full in the face. Then we kicked it right in the nuts. In other words, we absolutely refused to surrender the points, despite several spells when an Ipswich goal seemed completely inevitable. To quote a cliché, you make your own luck.

13th December 1997- New Division Two, Watford 1 Bristol City 1

BSAD image BHappy report: Cracking match, this. Whereas the earlier clash with Millwall, which seemed equally important at the time, proved to be a considerable anti-climax, this was an occasion that was worthy of the hype. Ironically, neither keeper had to make a save (apart from the goals, natch) – but that was only due to some outstanding defending, a reminder that the best sides are often distinguished by their resilience.
