BBC Sport Watford boss Marco Silva says he was never worried about their bad form, as they beat Leicester City to end a six-game winless run.

sky Watford picked up a first win in seven games after coming from behind to earn a 2-1 victory over Leicester at Vicarage Road on Boxing Day.

guardian Watford have bemoaned their misfortune in recent weeks but here Marco Silva’s team were grateful for the unwitting assistance of Kasper Schmeichel as they fought back from a deficit to end a miserable series of results. The Leicester City goalkeeper turned a cross by Abdoulaye Doucouré into his own net in the 65th minute to complete Watford’s comeback after Molla Wagué had negated Riyad Mahrez’s opening goal for the visitors.

BHappy imageYes, Swansea on Saturday looked a winnable fixture, maybe, but the gentle descent in our recent run from the forgivable through the slightly unfortunate to the downright appalling hadn’t left us banking on anything much.

FranAfter a lovely Christmas day with the family, it was off to Vicarage Road to see if we could arrest the recent slump.   The Boxing Day game is one of the first that I look for when the fixtures come out.  I always look forward to them, even if they rarely give us anything to cheer (I am still smarting from the injury time goal by Kirk Stephens in 1979).

Tales from the VicarageAfter four defeats on the bounce, Watford returned to winning ways on a tense Boxing Day afternoon at The Vic.

BBC Sport Leicester City guaranteed their Premier League survival with a deserved home victory over struggling Watford.

sky Leicester maintained their perfect home record under Craig Shakespeare in the Premier League as they beat Watford 3-0 on Saturday.

Telegraph Walter Mazzarri’s future as Watford manager appears increasingly precarious and it is Craig Shakespeare who looks far more likely to be in the technical area next season.  A fifth successive away defeat without scoring will pile more pressure on Mazzarri, while his decision to drop Troy Deeney is unlikely to generate support with the majority of supporters.

Independent Leicester cruised to a comfortable 3-0 victory over Watford to all-but seal Premier League safety.

guardian A year can be a long time in football. Twelve months after the 5,000-1 shots were crowned Premier League champions here, goals from Wilfred Ndidi, Riyad Mahrez and Marc Albrighton secured a victory for Leicester that moved them into the top half of the table for the first time since September.

BHappy image There are days when it’s just a bad idea all round.  The great empty swathes of seats in the away end for what should be a popular trip – local-ish, easy to get to, against the League Champions to boot – suggested that plenty had had the same thought.  Dad nearly didn’t make it, Daughter 1 pondered whether she should forego the afternoon in favour of preparation for her forthcoming SATs.  Meanwhile the pre-match pub turned out to be closed;  we opted for an alternative next to the station, but beat a disorientated path from the pub in entirely the wrong direction until we sorted ourselves out.  Sometimes the world is trying to tell you something.

BHappy image Quite how the game would have panned out but for the penalty we’ll never know.  One possibility of course is that we’d have capitalised further on this extraordinary start, or that Leicester would have come back at us and, on failing to break through, overcommitted leaving us holes to exploit.

screen-shot-2016-10-03-at-19-13-20No sooner had we taken our seats after kick-off but we were out of them again as Capoue opened the scoring after Pereyra had broken forward and delivered a cross that was knocked down by Deeney for the Frenchman to hit home.  All of a sudden the cobwebs were swept away, the horror of Liverpool was forgotten and football was fun again.

screen-shot-2016-10-30-at-15-22-53 Prior to kick off, Leicester City kindly gave each of the travelling supporters a free hat.

screen-shot-2016-11-25-at-17-02-07 While walking to the station the Leicester fans were trying to salvage what they could. “Does anyone know if Watford have played in Europe?” I piped up behind them, “Yes, getting to the third round of the UEFA Cup, 1983-84.”

BBC: Jamie Vardy scored for a ninth successive Premier League game as Leicester beat Watford to go level on points with Manchester City and Arsenal at the top of the table. Vardy got Leicester’s second from the spot, converting after he was tripped by Watford goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes.

Sky: Gomes had a game to forget, allowing N’Golo Kante’s timid shot to slip through his fingers as the home side made the breakthrough on 52 minutes.

Fran’s Watford Blog: So, we were defeated, which was disappointing as we deserved a point from the game.  Leicester have had a great start to the season, but the only difference between the teams was that their misplaced passes rebounded to their own players more often than ours did.  Gomes earned massive respect from the travelling fans by coming straight over to us, pointing to himself and mouthing “It was me.”  As he turned to leave the pitch, he was serenaded with “Heurelho Gomes Baby” which pleased me greatly and hopefully gave him some comfort.  Everyone there knew what he has contributed so far this season and that, despite his mistakes in this game, his account is still very much in the black.

BBC SportLeicester City recorded their 14th win from 19 games this season by beating Watford at Vicarage Road.  The visitors took an early lead when a clearance by Watford keeper Manuel Almunia hit Chris Wood in the face and rebounded into the net.

skyThe build-up to the match was dominated by memories of last season’s dramatic final day clash at Vicarage Road, when Knockaert’s missed penalty proved costly as Troy Deeney netted the winner down the other end, meaning the Foxes missed out on the play-off final.

BHappy imageYou could see this coming from several miles – and months – away. Frankly, I’d braced myself for a season’s worth of this back in August. Has there ever been a campaign in the club’s history when the current level of expectation has ended in something other than a train wreck? Certainly not in the Premier League era, when expectation has generally been accompanied by foolhardy over-spending, weighing up the cost of not getting promoted as if it were tangible on the balance sheet, and followed by a grand washing-of-hands by the supporters who demanded it. “Yeah, but we didn’t mean Nathan Ellington.”

12th May 2013- Championship Playoff Semi-Final Second Leg, Watford 3 Leicester City 1 (Watford won 3-2 on aggregate)

http://watford.fcdb.info?id=5066

BHappy image If you’ve come for a calm, balanced perspective on things you’ve come to the wrong place.  Surely nobody with a vested interest is capable of anything approaching objectivity this evening, in the context of the quite extraordinary last eight days…  your best qualified candidate for this is in Cornwall, of all places, so you’re stuck with me.  And just a few hours ago I was shuffling up a dazed Occupation Road with a bouncing six year old proclaiming that we were “definitely going to win the final.  For certain.  If they score a hundred goals, we’ll score a thousand….”.  That result, for one, is no longer in doubt, but don’t expect cold analysis here. We’re far too far gone for that.

BBC Sport Troy Deeney scored Watford’s aggregate winner in an extraordinary finish to their Championship play-off semi-final against Leicester.  Twenty seconds after Anthony Knockaert had a debatable penalty saved at the other end, Deeney thumped in a shot.

guardian A quite astonishing finish to this play-off semi-final second leg saw the game swing from apparently certain success for Leicester to a Watford victory in less than 20 seconds.
