WATFORD OPINION: Hornets must make the most of home comforts after Liverpool hammering

BBC SportMohamed Salah scored four goals as Liverpool moved up to third in the Premier League table by thrashing Watford at Anfield.

skySalah struck twice in the first half and then twice again late in the game to secure his first Liverpool hat-trick and take his tally to 36 for the season in all competitions.

guardianWatford will have returned home last night wondering how they were on the end of such a sobering scoreline. They were by no means a shambles. Yet, in sport, ability generally finds a way of shining through and Salah’s class is so clearcut, so emphatic and so enjoyable that he is comfortably the Premier League’s most attractive sight at present.

TelegraphIt is hard to imagine, after this brutal dismantling, that the two sides had shared the spoils in a 3-3 draw at Vicarage Road back in August.

FranThere were some positives for the Hornets.  Karnezis, despite letting in five goals, put on a decent show.  But my highlight was a decent performance from Pereyra, who put together some lovely moves which cheered me up greatly on a day when there were few moments of joy.  He seems to shine against more talented opposition as he clearly feels that he is less likely to be clattered.

The Hornets NestWhilst in the ground I obviously took a few obligatory selfies.  As I was taking them a very kind steward asked if I would like him to take a proper photo of me. What a kind gesture I thought and so I took him up on the offer.  I always get very anxious about other people taking a photo for me. It has to be done right and I can get a little bit picky about what needs to be in it and angles and stuff.

This steward however had a different idea.  Instead of taking a few dodgy ones where I’d have to be very British and say “they’re great, thanks very much” he in fact held the camera button on my phone down and put it into ‘burst’ mode and thus took 100 photos.

Yes, you read that right. 100 awkward photos of me at Anfield.

RELIVE – Watford v Liverpool: Hornets begin life under Silva with six-goal thriller at Vicarage Road

Miguel Britos scored a dramatic injury-time equaliser as Watford claimed a 3-3 draw in a thrilling Premier League opener against Liverpool at Vicarage Road. Watford took a 2-1 lead into the half-time break after strong first half showing, which saw Stefano Okaka and Abdoulaye Doucoure score either side of Sadio Mane’s leveller. The game turned in Liverpool’s favour early in the second half as Roberto Firmino’s penalty and a debut goal for Mohamed Salah put the visitors ahead.

RATINGS: How did Watford’s players get on in their Premier League draw against Liverpool?

BBC SportMiguel Britos scored a controversial 93rd-minute equaliser for Watford as Liverpool were held in a thrilling game at Vicarage Road.

skyMiguel Britos struck deep into stoppage time as Watford secured a late point following a 3-3 draw with Liverpool at Vicarage Road on Saturday.

guardianThe expression on Jürgen Klopp’s face as Watford celebrations broke out all around him said it all. A testing 24 hours for Liverpool, dominated by Philippe Coutinho’s emailed transfer request, ended with the sort of injury-time equaliser that drives managers insane. Miguel Britos, looking at least a yard offside, bundled the ball home from a corner in the 93rd minute, denying Liverpool the victory that would have brought some much-needed respite during the Coutinho saga.

IndependentNew season, same old problems for Liverpool. Against Watfordthey were made to pay the price for an all too familiar defensive horror show, as Miguel Britos headed home a 94th-minute equaliser to deny Jurgen Klopp victory in his 100th competitive game in charge of the club.

TelegraphWhatever it was the Premier League defenders were doing over the summer it was not improving their defending.  After Friday’s seven-goal opener to the season, came another six at Vicarage Road. And had Franco Baresi, Paolo Maldini or Fabio Cannevaro been in  attendance as the self-proclaimed finest league in the world got under way, the great Italian defenders would have wondered what on earth had happened to the dark art of keeping a clean sheet.

BHappy imageIt’s a classic First Day of the Season.  Sunshine on your face walking down Vicarage Road.  Touts after tickets, programme vendors, charity buckets.  50/50 scarves on sale for a tenner (“who buys them?”).  Friends rock up, you’ve not seen them for three months…  “how was your summer?”.  Albert is here for the first time in even longer, it’s good to see him.  He’s stunned by how tall the girls are, they are nonplussed but grin anyway.  There are flags, and noise, a tremendous montage on the big screens.  And then, then the football.  As has been said many times if you rely solely on the sport itself for your enjoyment you’re going to be disappointed more often than not but still, football.  And it’s just brilliant…

FranThe first day of the season and, on arriving in Watford, it was grey and drizzly.  I was at the Hornet Shop before 9:30, so it was rather bizarre to see the programme sellers and burger stands already setting up.  Having bought the new home and away shirts, a woolly hat (just in case) and a Watford coffee cup, I headed to the museum to get in line for the Graham Taylor exhibition.

The Hornets NestFootball’s bloody brilliant, isn’t it?  We’ve waited the whole summer and our patience was rewarded in the most emphatic way.

Hornet effectWhatever it was the Premier League defenders were doing over the summer it certainly wasn’t improving their defence.

BBC Sport Emre Can scored one of the goals of the season as Liverpool beat a poor Watford to capitalise on favourable results in the race for the Champions League.

sky Emre Can scored a contender for goal of the season as Liverpool remained in the driving seat for a top-four finish with a 1-0 victory at Watford.

guardian Emre Can was still smiling in disbelief as he attempted to piece together the moment which had thrust hopes of reaching the Champions League firmly back into Liverpool’s hands. “I saw the space and I ran in behind,” he said, presumably referring to the area vacated by Adrian Mariappa who had been drawn forward sensing the true threat lay with Roberto Firmino. “My first thought was that I wanted to head it. Then I didn’t think too much.” Instinct took over in the airborne split-second which followed and an ugly contest was transformed.

Independent When the goal came, at the very end of the first half, it felt so out of place with a game this bad, so at odds with the lack of quality here, that it felt for a second as if Craig Pawson might disallow it for encroachment from another, better match.

BHappy image I had intended to begin proceedings in rib-tickling and topical fashion with some sort of mock election manifesto. However, I quickly realised that my policy platform comprised little beyond a desire to roll back thirty years’ worth of progress: no substitute goalkeepers, an offside law that Alan Shearer can understand, compulsory Bovril, proper kickoff times, proper tackling, proper pitches, that sort of thing. Common sense. Back to basics. Take back control. Make football great again. You can do your own punchline.

FranAt the end of a busy bank holiday weekend, it felt rather odd to be going to a game on the Monday evening.  You certainly had to feel sorry for the Liverpool fans who would get home in the early hours with work beckoning in the morning.

screen-shot-2016-10-30-at-15-22-53 Ah, an 8pm kick off on a bank holiday Monday, the joys of being in the Premier League.  I’ll make this quick because A) I realise a lot of you will be back at work today and B) I’m going to see Ed Sheeran this evening, and I don’t fancy having an unfinished blog having over me as I dad dance to ‘Shape of You’ whilst at the O2

13th January 2007- Premier League, Watford 0 Liverpool 3

Liverpool ended a turbulent week with an emphatic Premiership win at Watford. After two cup exits at home to Arsenal, the under-pressure Reds responded with a fine display, Craig Bellamy scoring the first from Steve Finnan’s cross.

Watford are not so much out of their depth in the Premiership as trying to swim with one foot on the bottom. Such a lot of effort is devoted to keeping heads above water that attempts at progress are slow, painful and, in the case of Saturday’s inept display against Liverpool, downright embarrassing. Adrian Boothroyd’s team will not drown but they will surely return to the Championship paddling pool.

Watford’s manager Aidy Boothroyd had a far more frustrating afternoon. ‘I think that when you play one of the big four, sometimes there’s a choke that goes on,’ he said. ‘They see players that they see a lot on the TV. Sometimes some of them can’t cope with it.’ Boothroyd also revealed that there is now an ‘£8million bid on the table’ for Ashley Young but would not reveal other details.

And the postscript to Friday’s slightly ill-advised article is…Dammit.
