Beforehand, so much of the talk had been about countering the threat of Ellington and Roberts, and doing so without the considerable presence of Sean Dyche. Afterwards, so much of the talk should be about Neil Cox and Lloyd Doyley, who bossed that much-vaunted partnership about for the duration. For Cox, it was an evening of timely interventions, confident decisions, and minimal mistakes; the player that we appointed captain many months ago has not yet left the club. For the masterful Doyley, it was all about basic defending amplified to eleven: always tight, always disciplined, always quick, always concentrating, never beaten. Between them, and with plenty of help from elsewhere, they kept potent, strong, pacy strikers very quiet indeed.

24th May 2003- Watford FC Testimonial Day

In response to the financial troubles that led to the club selling and then leasing back Vicarage Road, Luther Blissett organised a special testimonial day which featured a game between a ‘Watford and International XI’ and a ‘Herts Select XI’.

At seven o’clock, debate is raging in the Estcourt. Whatever his mistakes, I can’t help feeling a little sorry for Luca Vialli, who has so far failed to create a team that can speak on his behalf and is therefore in the position of having every word in every sentence in every interview picked apart. Personally, I’m thoroughly bored by it all…so many opinions, so many personalities, so much guff (and I include this guff, of course) where there should be football.

It’s a long time since I have been able to pack life’s niggles into a box and keep the lid on it all the way through a Watford match. For me, going to football used to be all about leaving the outside world behind for ninety minutes, and immersing myself in a world of yellow and red. Somewhere along the way, the boundaries came down, and the world seeped in; the colours lost their brightness.

BSAD report:In a parallel universe, things are very different. Graham Taylor’s reign at Wolves continues, the Molineux fans having kept patience with their manager for long enough to allow him to end their quest for Premiership status. As his side challenges for a UEFA cup spot, rumours of promotion for Taylor to a job at a bigger club surface with each new vacancy…but no-one is loopy enough to mention a return to Watford.

I don’t know where to start, to be honest. As Kate said in her Southend report, there are some games where you go home wondering why the bloody hell you bother travelling the length and breadth of the country to watch over-paid footballers under-achieving. Then, only occasionally, they come up with something like this and you’re jumping around like a nutter, screaming and shouting in utter jubilation and thinking that maybe it is all worthwhile after all.

2nd April 1996- New Division One, Watford 3 Sunderland 3

The fact that I saw about two dozen Sunderland fans for every Hornet on the way to the ground seemed to be a fair reflection of the states of the two clubs – one Premiership-bound, the other way adrift at the bottom. I’ll be quite honest – I didn’t fancy this one at all, especially after getting stuffed at Wolves. I’d rather boil my head than see us get slaughtered in meaningless games, so I wasn’t looking forward to the game one bit.
