A moment of madness by Millwall’s Kevin Muscat helped Watford on their way to their first League win of the season.  Muscat conceded a penalty, and was sent off, for stamping on Danny Webber in the Millwall area in first-half injury-time

BSAD report: The concern about our start to the season, therefore, was not so much that the results themselves might prove to be disastrous. And it certainly wasn’t that the performances suggested that nine months of thankless struggle were inevitable. There was – is – nothing that can’t be salvaged, apart from the still dreadful events of 9th August.

BSADIt’s hard to believe that there are already so many what-ifs and might-have-beens so early in the season. Of course, some of those what-ifs and might-have-beens continue to over-shadow events on the pitch, making our last two results seem trivial by comparison…and yet it’s also obvious that, while the shadows would still remain, a win or two would add some valuable, vital sunshine to the picture.

BBC SportGoals in either half from Heidar Helguson and Tommy Smith sunk 10-man Burnley.

BSAD imageBSAD report: For much of the game, the defence was less an accident waiting to happen than a catastrophe in progress – the individual performances were generally sound, but the unit was a haphazardly-assembled flat-pack – and various other parts only functioned in fits and starts too. Really, though, you can’t escape the fact that, for a side without a win in four games, this was an extraordinarily eager, aggressive and whole-hearted performance.

25th November 2001- New Division One, Watford 3 Portsmouth 0

A solid performance by Watford at Vicarage Road ended a poor run of form from Gianluca Vialli’s team.

Nothing of any consequence happens on a Sunday evening. The invention of the wheel, the discovery of penicillin, the abolition of slavery, the introduction of the backpass law…none of them happened while the people involved were lounging around in front of “Monarch Of The Glen”.

BBC SportWatford were given tough introduction to the Premiership by Egil Olsen’s Wimbledon.

IndependentAS THE sun set on last season’s opening afternoon Graham Taylor, the Watford manager, stood on the touch line at Fratton Park, wearing shorts and a smile, after his freshly-promoted team had beaten Portsmouth with the help of an outrageous own goal. Newly promoted once more, Taylor was left content after his enthusiastic side contrived to snatch defeat from the jaws of a draw with a similarly comical self-inflicted blow.

BSAD imageBSAD report: At Vicarage Road, excitement crackles in the air like static. For a spine-shivering moment loitering in Occupation Road, I can vividly recall the mood before our First Division debut against Everton all those years ago. This feels the same, and it’s impossible to believe that we’re anything other than invincible. I hadn’t been aware of waiting for the Premiership kickoff – life seems full to overflowing right now, summer seemed too short – but suddenly impatience overwhelms everything.
