skyNewcastle recorded their first Premier League victory of the season as Ayoze Perez scored in a 1-0 win over Watford on Saturday.  Having failed to win any of their opening 10 league games of a season for just the second time in their history, the relief around St James Park’ was clear to see when the striker headed home (64).

BBC SportThe Magpies rode their luck in the first half, with Watford duo Adrian Mariappa and Gerard Deulofeu both guilty of spurning excellent opportunities to put the Hornets ahead.

guardianIt might have been very different had Deufoleu been wearing his shooting boots but Fernández held Newcastle together commendably, his presence serving as a form of gloriously adhesive super-glue.

BHappy imageYeah.  Defeat, then.  A bloody long way to come for an underwhelming outcome.  If there was a consolation it was that there are worse places to visit than Newcastle with its admirable carpet of proper pubs.  We visited a third before braving the train journey home.

FranThere were a lot of angry Watford fans after the game.  There was some justification for this as Newcastle had been very poor and were there for the taking.  But the first half performance had been impressive and the Hornets should have been 3 or 4 up at half time.  If the Pereyra shot that hit the crossbar early in the second half had gone in, we would have won the game.  But Newcastle worked hard, managed to get a goal from a set piece and it seemed to be game over from that point.  Still it is very dispiriting to hear so much anger directed at the players who have entertained us wonderfully so far this season.  We are half way to safety with less than 30% of the games played, so are already on the way to having a great season.  There will be the odd blip, but that shouldn’t derail the support as we are all in this together.  It would be great if some of our more volatile supporters could remember that.

How times have changed.  Not just in that we come up to St.James’ Park and win, not just that such a win isn’t a smash and grab or a massive shock in itself, though both of those are remarkable.  The truly monumental thing is that we can come here and not play that well, actually, and win 3-0.

Fran

The walk to St James’s Park is all uphill, but that is just the appetiser before the trek up to Level 7.  As we climbed, there were posters warning about the dangers and penalties for pyrotechnics.  One dire warning suggested that you could end up in A&E.  I was concerned that the walk to the gods was more likely to send me there.

BBC: Newcastle’s winless start to the season continued as Odion Ighalo’s double led Watford to a second successive victory.

Sky: The hosts put in an improved display after the break, thanks in part to Daryl Janmaat who halved the deficit shortly after the hour mark. But Watford held on for their first victory at St James’ since 1981, while Steve McClaren’s wait for a first victory as Newcastle manager continues.

ESPN: The Nigeria international struck on 10 and 28 minutes as he took advantage of some pitiful defending to give the promoted Hornets what proved to be a decisive lead.

Fran’s Watford Blog: In the run up to the game, the Newcastle Chronicle had an article which included the paragraph, “Let’s face it, Watford are pygmies living in a land of giants.  They deserve huge credit for achieving what they have, but clubs like Newcastle, with 50,000 fans bellowing them on, ought to sweep them contemptuously aside.”  The words made my blood boil, but meant that Flores didn’t need to dig too deep to get inspiration for the pre-match team talk.

BBC SportNewcastle extended their lead at the top of the Championship to six points with a workmanlike victory at Watford.

guardianNewcastle United completed a rich harvest from February when, in their sixth league match of the month, they took their tally to 13 points by overcoming a Watford side that was pretty in possession but toothless in front of goal. It was Newcastle’s first away win in six games since early December and extends their lead at the top of the division to six points, now from West Bromwich Albion.

TelegraphAnd so the Newcastle juggernaut rolls on. What was remarkable about this victory was its almost complete lack of anything to remark on. Two goals, and a six-point lead at the top of Championship, compiled with the minimum of fuss.

BHappy imageThe overriding emotion is one of frustration; dominance in the middle of the park is of limited value if you can’t defend a set piece, and don’t have the guile to unpick a defence. Enormously frustrating to see whatever neat passing we could fashion on what is suddenly a hugely unhelpful surface labour to create chances whilst free headers were being offered to Newcastle in our own box.

13th May 2007- Premier League, Watford 1 Newcastle United 1

This was an emotional day for those in Watford’s goal. Ben Foster played the final game of his two season loan spell from Manchester United. He was substituted in the 90th minute for Alec Chamberlain who came on for the last game in a career that spanned 25 years and 678 appearances, over 250 of them for Watford. The one minute cameo made Alec the second oldest Premier League player ever at 42 years 327 days only beaten by Manchester City’s John Rudge who was 43 when he played for them in 1995. Alec continued to work at Vicarage Road as a goalkeeper coach until 2017. Ben Foster, of course, would return to Watford in 2018.
