24th July 2010- Friendly, Northampton Town 3 Watford 3

Malky Mackay was set to seek some answers from his players at training today after criticising a lack of “passion” during the first-half performance in the 3-3 pre-season friendly draw at Northampton Town.

28th March 1998-New Division Two, Watford 1 Northampton Town 1

Saturday’s result might’ve been a bit wonky but, by and large, the performance was full of unheard of things like poise and elegance and style and even class. It was actually really quite good, like.

BSAD: My lightning-quick tour of the nation began with a five o’clock alarm call at my mum’s house in Watford. From there it was an early morning charge up to Nottingham for a game against the Forest mailing list at ten. Nursing the wounds from a 5-0 defeat, we trundled back down the M1 to Sixfields before the final part of the round-trip took me back to rain-soaked Brighton. Michael Palin, eat yer heart out.

BSAD: In essence, we got away with it. It would be easy to say that this was a below par performance – it wasn’t, it was about what we’ve come to expect. Confidence has an obvious part to play – as soon as we scored (in fact, as soon as Wayne Andrews, livewire that he is, came on) we looked a vastly superior side and put all our earlier discomfort behind us. What remains worrying, however, is the lack of quality in our service to the forwards – we have yet to learn how to rise above the hustle and bustle of a lower division game, something which won’t be helped by a short-term injury to Robert Page since Steve Palmer will presumably have to move back into defence to be replaced by the less-than-visionary Richard Johnson. And we really must sort out some decent free kick and corner routines.
