Preston 3 Watford 0 – how the action unfolded at Deepdale

Watford boss shares thoughts on Baah, Bayo and Ogbonna

Cleverley blasts Watford’s ‘mid-table’ mindset at Preston

Sky: Osmajic, who last week was charged by the Football Association with allegedly biting an opponent, responded to being brought into the starting line-up by boss Paul Heckingbottom by putting the hosts ahead with a finish eight minutes after the break, before adding a second in the 65th minute. A superb Ali McCann strike subsequently extended the advantage with 15 minutes remaining as Preston registered only their second win of the campaign and moved up a place to 21st in the table. Tom Cleverley’s Watford stay eighth.

BHappy: Saturday was significant in that it stemmed a wobble, a fine performance against a strong opponent that got a monkey off our backs and set us up for another positive run of results.  But… you’ve got to follow that up, it’s not a given.  From the off this performance was less focused, less disciplined, less urgent.  As if we felt we’d done the difficult bit, and that Preston away was somehow a lighter touch.  This division above all divisions doesn’t let you get away with that.  Tom pointing out pre-match that Preston finished above that last season indicated that he was aware of the risk but slightly alarming that it even needed saying.

Fran’s Watford Blog: I am not one to boo or yell, but it was an absolutely dreadful performance from the Hornets. I don’t know where that came from after the two excellent showings in the past week. We wasted a couple of great chances in the first half, but once Preston took the lead, we never really looked like getting back into it. Preston were playing a pressing game and the players couldn’t cope with it. But what was most disappointing was the number of poor passes and the complete inability to control a ball demonstrated by a number of players who are much better than that. Preston are not a good team and looked vulnerable until they scored. Adding insult to injury, Osmajić and McCann both scored their first goals of the season. The game is best forgotten and we have a chance to make amends on Saturday.

2nd October 2022- Championship, Stoke City 0 Watford 4

WFC.NET Jon Marks Goal Commentary: 1 2 3 4

BBC Sport: New Watford manager Slaven Bilic got off to a sensational winning start as his rampant Hornets side scored four goals at Stoke.

Sky Sports: Goals from Ismaila Sarr, Ken Sema, Keinan Davis and Vakoun Issouf Bayo secured Bilic an impressive win at the bet365 Stadium with the club’s biggest victory since hammering Bristol City 6-0 in February 2021.

Fran’s Watford Blog: So the Bilić era started with a result that was as unexpected as it was enjoyable.  The starting line-up had players in their favoured positions and the change to four at the back was a positive that allowed the attacking players more freedom.  From the kick-off there had been a more attacking approach than we saw under Edwards and it paid dividends.  Sarr gave his best performance in some time contributing a goal and an assist.  Sema was everywhere and thoroughly deserved the ovation that he received after being substituted.  Kamara was awarded the Man of the Match award and his performance was a joy.  But the highlight of the afternoon was the return of Louza, who was absolutely magnificent.  We were all dancing a jig after watching his performance.

2nd October 2021- Premier League, Leeds United 1 Watford 0

BBC Sport: Leeds picked up their first victory in the Premier League this season as defender Diego Llorente returned from injury to score the winner over Watford.

Sky Sports: Watford looked lethargic and made numerous errors throughout, even without two of their three substitutions being made due to injury. They did find the net in the second half in their best five-minute spell, but Christian Kabasele’s poke home was ruled out after he was judged to have fouled Liam Cooper in the build-up.

BHappy: This was pretty dreadful all told.  For all that there were nods of approval in the extensive queues for sustenance as the team news broke pre-match, Sierralta making a welcome return and Tufan’s first League start the most sensible looking solution to our midfield challenges, we never looked remotely equipped to cope with Leeds’ aggressive press, tamer versions of which we’ve struggled with already this season at Brighton and last week most obviously.

How did we manage to so nearly snatch a draw from the hands of what should have been a comfortable victory?
