28th September 2002- New Division One, Sheffield United 1 Watford 2

This was the first game played after the players had been asked to take a 12% wage cut as the seriousness of the club’s financial position, in the wake of the collapse of ITV Digital and the overspending of the Vialli era, became clear.

Icelandic striker Heidar Helguson was at the centre of two pivotal first-half minutes as Watford toppled high-flying Sheffield United.

Within the last seven days the severity of Watford’s financial mess has been dramatically highlighted, the club’s staff both on and off the pitch have volunteered an unsecured 12% deferment of wages, and administration has been spoken of as a serious possibility for the first time. One of the most distressing weeks supporting the football club that many of us can remember.

Sheffield United heaped misery on Watford boss Gianluca Vialli with a convincing victory at Vicarage Road.

If the 21st of April, and the Gillingham match that will finally put us out of our apparently infinite misery, is designated “Fan Appreciation Day”, then what on earth was this? “Fan Dissuasion Day”? “Fan Repulsion Day”? Whatever, it cleared the ground more efficiently than a fire alarm.

The applause for Robert Page, returning to his spiritual home, was a worthy tribute to a great club servant. It was noticeable that he did not gloat at the ease with which United scored all three of their goals, but I bet he was pissing himself as he walked down the tunnel and into the away dressing room. I also bet he was wondering quite why he was forced out of the club.

BSAD imageBSAD report: Regardless of what happens during the rest of the season, nobody’ll remember this one. You don’t get points for memories, anyway – all that matters is that we sneaked a victory in a match that never really got going until the final fifteen minutes.

BBC SportDespite being without two of their most expensive signings and influential players, Watford romped to victory over Sheffield United at Vicarage Road.

BSAD imageBSAD report: Four-one to the Golden Boys. Fond memories of similarly convincing scorelines against Swindon, Crewe and Stockport two years ago, back when life seemed so simple, the sun was always shining and Gifton was fit. Back when it was possible to be relaxed and happy as a game went into injury time, when it was conceivable that we might possess better individuals and score better goals than our opponents. With all due respect to Sheffield United, our first encounter with a recognisably run-of-the-mill First Division side was a singularly nostalgic experience.

Another BSAD report: What an afternoon. The framework of the Wimbledon game having been laid, we put out a team that played as fluently as any for two years. And without Nielsen, or Wooter, or Johnno, or Kennedy. My God, we’re a squad.

BSAD: It defies logic really. Your side are completely outclassed… you have little imagination or penetration up front, are losing out in midfield, and are struggling at the back. Then you score twice just before half-time, and Bob’s yer uncle. United, it must be said, will have had unluckier days….

BSAD imageBSAD report: This time last year, we were also drawing 1-1. At home to York City. So, no reason for frowning faces, no reason to dwell for too long on why Sheffield United didn’t become our seventh victims of the season. What we’ve achieved so far isn’t going to be undone by one hideous miss and two dropped points.
