report: The pre-match concern had been how our cobbled together defence would cope with the pace of the Liverpool team and the way that the home side started the game provided no comfort to Watford fans.

BBC Sport: Watford condemned bottom club Aston Villa to their 11th defeat in 14 Premier League games. Odion Ighalo poked home to give the visitors the lead, but Micah Richards’ header levelled it before half-time.

Sky Sports: Alan Hutton’s own goal put Watford back ahead after the break and former Villa youth player Troy Deeney’s header gave the visitors a two-goal cushion.

Watford goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes has been given the all-clear after he was taken to hospital with a neck injury suffered in the second half of the 3-2 victory at Aston Villa on Saturday afternoon. Gomes fell awkwardly after colliding with Hornets defender Craig Cathcart in the 67th minute and was given oxygen during an eight-minute stoppage before being stretched off with his neck in a brace.  The former Tottenham stopper never lost consciousness while on the field and was replaced by Lithuanian Giedrius Arlauskis for his first Premier League appearance.

Troy Deeney’s last-minute own goal gave injury-hit Manchester United victory over Watford at Vicarage Road. Deeney looked to have earned a point for the Hornets with a late penalty, but then slid home a Bastian Schweinsteiger cross. Memphis Depay – starting a Premier League match for the first time since 4 October – netted United’s opener, volleying home an Ander Herrera cross.

Watford equalised with three minutes remaining through Deeney’s penalty after Odion Ighalo was brought down by Marcos Rojo – the first goal United had conceded in nearly 11 hours of football in all competitions.

There was one moment of serious concern for United. Young was caught in possession by Etienne Capoue, who presented Odion Ighalo with a clear opening only for the Nigerian marksman to shoot over midway through the first half.

Those final few minutes will be hard for Troy Deeney to absorb. Watford’s captain appeared to have rescued a point for the hosts when he shattered David de Gea’s magnificent resistance with a penalty in the 87th minute and it seemed that the day would end in frustration for United, who had spurned so many chances after Memphis Depay’s early goal. Yet the sucker punch came when Deeney’s attempt to clear Bastian Schweinsteiger’s shot ended with the ball trickling over the line. “It was painful,” Quique Sánchez Flores said.

It’s cold.  Bloody cold.   This sort of detail doesn’t feature in any statistical record of a season, but it should, it can be a defining piece of information.  Think… Torquay in the Auto Windscreens Shield.  Fulham on the last day of the season in 1998.  Any visit to bloody Oldham.  Characterised by the weather. Lest this slip through the cracks of your memory, should soccerbase fail to expand their database to accommodate weather conditions, let it be recorded for posterity that it’s cold.

BBC: Jamie Vardy scored for a ninth successive Premier League game as Leicester beat Watford to go level on points with Manchester City and Arsenal at the top of the table. Vardy got Leicester’s second from the spot, converting after he was tripped by Watford goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes.

Sky: Gomes had a game to forget, allowing N’Golo Kante’s timid shot to slip through his fingers as the home side made the breakthrough on 52 minutes.

Fran’s Watford Blog: So, we were defeated, which was disappointing as we deserved a point from the game.  Leicester have had a great start to the season, but the only difference between the teams was that their misplaced passes rebounded to their own players more often than ours did.  Gomes earned massive respect from the travelling fans by coming straight over to us, pointing to himself and mouthing “It was me.”  As he turned to leave the pitch, he was serenaded with “Heurelho Gomes Baby” which pleased me greatly and hopefully gave him some comfort.  Everyone there knew what he has contributed so far this season and that, despite his mistakes in this game, his account is still very much in the black.

BHappy image We haven’t mentioned Graham Taylor yet, have we? The club’s ceremony for the great man and his newly-named stand is beautifully concise and perfectly judged: a guard of honour made of former players and staff, a presentation, a short speech, and that’s enough to cause most of us of a certain age to get a little misty-eyed.

22nd November 2014- Championship, Watford 1 Derby County 2

Derby went clear at the top of the Championship after Craig Bryson’s impressive strike from outside the area saw them win at Watford.

Win, lose or draw – and it turned out to be the middle option for Watford, you could argue Slavisa Jokanovic was a winner just for being on the touchline. In the previous two international breaks, Watford’s owners changed managers but the Serb survived this most recent break.

Derby were every bit as good as advertised, and whatever our mistakes or limitations it should be borne in mind that we still fashioned enough opportunities to have beaten lesser sides – indeed we’ve played if not worse then certainly as badly as this and won on several occasions this season.
