Highlights | Bournemouth 1-1 Watford

Glenn Murray scored and had a late penalty saved as Bournemouth were held to a home draw by Watford.

After the break the game opened up, and Ben Watson rattled the crossbar for Watford with a half-volley from 10 yards on 51 minutes. The Hornets were much improved in the second half, with Ikechi Anya heavily involved after a quiet first 45 minutes.

Watford, who had not created a single chance of their own, were handed one a minute before time. Boruc gathered a routine back pass from Sylvain Distin, but as he attempted to play it back to the defender Ighalo intercepted, skipped past Boruc and rolled the ball into an empty net, for his fifth goal of the season.

It’s been seventeeen years since I came to Dean Court.  That was a very different time, a different set of circumstances altogether.  Everything’s changed since then, the teams, the sport, the profile of the fixture.  Hell, even Dean Court itself has been picked up, rotated ninety degrees and plonked down again.  It’s small, of course… small for it’s current lofty status.  Half the capacity of the Vic, which is hardly a colosseum in this environment itself.   And as such it feels almost as if it belongs in 1997, back when we played at stadiums this size, nestled into a well to do area of large houses and  shady avenues as a sort of afterthought, a discarded multi-vehicle garage abandoned between the houses.  Bournemouth aren’t above their station…

It was a classic game of two halves.  We had been completely woeful in the first period, Bournemouth having most of the possession and any time that Watford did pass the ball forward, it was swept up by the Bournemouth defence.  In the second half, we were snapping in to tackles and not allowing the opposition to have any time on the ball while our balls upfield were finding their men with Ighalo and Deeney finally having some success in holding the ball up.  Bournemouth won’t have won any more friends among the Watford faithful as they lived up to their reputation for theatrics.  But a draw was a fair result and I was more than happy to leave with a point.

7th October 2014- Billy McKinlay replaced as Watford head coach by Slavisa Jokanovic

This decision was when the habit of the Pozzos to regularly change head coach really started to be widely commented upon by the wider football community.

BBC Sport: Former Chelsea midfielder Slavisa Jokanovic has replaced Billy McKinlay as Watford boss, only eight days after the Scot was put in charge.

Sky Sports: McKinlay’s reign – the sixth shortest in English football history – followed Oscar Garcia’s four weeks in charge.

The Guardian: “Our job is always to act in the best long-term interests of this football club,” the Watford owner, Gino Pozzo, said in a statement. “There can be no compromise on this – whatever the circumstances. I fully support the view from our technical staff that, given the talented squad which has been assembled and our position in the league, an experienced head coach with a winning pedigree is of primary importance to help ensure the success we are all striving for.”

Watford Observer: We have been told Watford were keen for McKinlay to remain at the club as first team coach, which was the role he was initially hired for on September 26, but that the 45-year-old refused the demotion.

BHappy image report:A word for the new Community Stand, part-opened for the first time.  Thank goodness.  Thank the Pozzos.  At long last after so many missed opportunities.  ig might miss the Main Stand, but once you’ve said goodbye to something, you know, you want it to go, you want it to be replaced.

Derby took the lead three times at Watford as they recorded their second successive Championship victory under new manager Steve McClaren.

The match got off to a pulsating start with both sides scoring inside the opening 12 minutes, Fernando Forestieri equalising after Jamie Ward’s opener.

The best aspect of this season thus far from our point of view has been the entertainment value.  Twelve league games in, plus three in the League Cup… how many have been anything less than gripping?  (Even if, admittedly, some of that excitement has been our own doing in situations where you’d prefer dull defensive competence).  The opening fifteen minutes or so here were suitably mundane…  Derby’s notorious vulnerability at corners was manifest and Essaid Belkalem ghosted in (or as close as a monstrous Algerian can get to “ghosting”) at the far post.  He should have scored.  Two minutes later and Jamie Ward, half Belkalem’s size and with what looked a tougher heading chance, outjumped his marker to put the Rams ahead from Bryson’s brilliant cross.  Another five minutes and Fernando’s levelled it again with a gorgeous dink.  Same old, same old.
