10th April 2004- New Division One, Watford 2 Crewe Alexandra 1

Happily for us, none of our other rivals in the unseemly melee at the foot of the first division made the blindest bit of difference to their chances of survival during our two weeks of Millwall-induced inactivity. Crewe, who are very much still one of those clubs in trouble, arrived at The Vic for the first of three fixtures which given the all round closeness of the battle, are not so much “winner takes all” as “winner takes a small step away from trouble but still get to look over their shoulders anxiously”. With mouth-watering trips to Burnley and Rotherham to follow, a win was not so much desired as down right essential to our prospects. Small steps maybe, but ones we have to take.

Standards. That’s what this was all about, really. For all that the team selection did indeed include most of the fans’ favourites in a 4-4-2, that wasn’t the difference between this week and last week. It helped, but that’s all. Here, individuals matched up to the standards that we demand of them, and that they ought to demand of themselves. It was an afternoon of taking responsibility, of playing with resolve and determination, of many of the things that the season has so lacked. And all of this against opponents who did absolutely nothing to help us along on our way.

BSAD report: The second half picked up where the first half finished, with the Hornets in the ascendancy. Devlin might have had a penalty having been brought down by Boertien, but better was to follow on fifty-two minutes. Helguson flicked on a long ball from stand in skipper Neal Ardley, who also defied his critics with a determined display at right back. Gavin Mahon picked up the flick and bulldozed his way into the box, where he applied a neat finish to give the Hornets the lead. Get in there. Yes, Yes and YES!

Hell, does anyone really want to pick over these bones? Will it tell us anything new, anything that we don’t know already? If you’re still holding out hope for Tuesday, then I applaud your optimism…and you might take some heart from a moderately rousing finale, even if its stirring passion was mainly manifested in Heidar Helguson narrowly escaping another red card for a stupid elbow and Paul Devlin being pointlessly petulant with anyone who came near him, friend or foe. And Paul Mayo had a competent, quietly impressive home debut too. Otherwise, though, there ain’t much that you’d want to look at, good or bad. It just was, and oppressively so. Frankly, Tuesday can’t come slowly enough.

This would be the last time we played this incarnation of Wimbledon and by then they were very much Wimbledon in name only. They were already playing home games at the National Hockey Stadium in Milton Keynes and at the end of the season the Football League allowed Pete Winkleman to change the name of the side he’d taken over to the MK Dons.

The fans of the real club had already established AFC Wimbledon in the summer of 2002 and at the time of this game were top of the Combined Counties League which they would win starting a run of 5 promotions taking them back to the Football League in 2011.
