29th March 2002- New Division One, Watford 0 Bradford City 0 Leave a Reply http://watford.fcdb.info?id=4501 Bradford almost snatched all three points as both Tom Kearney and Eoin Jess rattled the woodwork in the second half at Vicarage Road. Having wasted a large chunk of a beautiful Good Friday on this thoroughly grey, tedious match, you’ll have to forgive me if I’m unwilling to do the same with an equally glorious Saturday. It was very dull indeed – a game of no real importance, with no serious attempt made to keep up the illusion – and we’ve all got better things to do with our time. I can hear the Hoover calling me as I type…. https://www.soccerbase.com/matches/results.sd?date=2002-03-29 https://www.11v11.com/league-tables/league-division-1/29-march-2002/ Share this: Share on X (Opens in new window) X Share on Facebook (Opens in new window) Facebook
25th November 2001- New Division One, Watford 3 Portsmouth 0 Leave a Reply A solid performance by Watford at Vicarage Road ended a poor run of form from Gianluca Vialli’s team. Nothing of any consequence happens on a Sunday evening. The invention of the wheel, the discovery of penicillin, the abolition of slavery, the introduction of the backpass law…none of them happened while the people involved were lounging around in front of “Monarch Of The Glen”. http://watford.fcdb.info?s=39661&id=4476 Share this: Share on X (Opens in new window) X Share on Facebook (Opens in new window) Facebook
10th November 2001- New Division One, Watford 1 Stockport County 1 Leave a Reply Watford striker Tommy Smith saved team-mate Paul Robinson’s blushes with an 89th minute equaliser. Left-back Paul Robinson inexplicably chested a Glynn Hurst cross into his own net in the 79th minute after getting into a mix-up with goalkeeper Alec Chamberlain. But with one minute of normal time left Marcus Gayle crossed for Smith who flicked home a leveller. It’d be hard to imagine a more one-sided match. By my reckoning, Stockport managed one shot in the entire ninety minutes – absurdly, bearing in mind the scoreline, it didn’t result in a goal. Oh, there was one other attempt, which hit a defender before it had even crossed the eighteen yard line and ballooned into the stand behind. They created two chances worthy of note, one in either half and both ended by the majestic Neil Cox before the ball could be struck towards goal. http://watford.fcdb.info?s=36912&id=4473 Share this: Share on X (Opens in new window) X Share on Facebook (Opens in new window) Facebook
1st October 2000- New Division One, Watford 2 Birmingham City 0 Leave a Reply BSAD reports: Ah, Birmingham. Our familiar, if strangely accented, friends. Welcome back, with your song that has fifty-seven verses of proudly but unintelligibly mumbled nonsense. Welcome back, with your fully developed sense of “sleeping giant” superiority that gets you nowhere at all and turns you into Wolves Mk II. Welcome back, with your manager who seems to have a permanent cold and a permanent bad mood to go with it. Really, we’ve missed you. Tricky one, this. We’ll all look back on it – players, staff, fans – and think, whoa, good side, Birmingham, big test, two-nil, hey, we were sailing along. Truth to tell, it was mucky work, and anyone with a slightly better memory for detail will always recall that too. September has only just slipped by but the bookies have effectively closed the betting on the First Division title race. Fulham, nine wins on the bounce, have it sewn up and the others are competing for the minor placings. That theory, which became more compelling after Jean Tigana’s remarkably consistent team eased their way to victory at Bolton, is a trifle harsh on Watford, who have themselves started as though the season is a sprint and not a marathon. http://watford.fcdb.info?id=4414 Share this: Share on X (Opens in new window) X Share on Facebook (Opens in new window) Facebook
16th May 1999- New Division One Playoff Semi-Final First Leg, Watford 1 Birmingham City 0 Leave a Reply http://watford.fcdb.info?id=4357 Real life is something to stumble haphazardly through, the bits of my brain that are supposed to be occupying themselves with useful stuff daydreaming of Wem-ber-lee instead. Real life is Saturday and Saturday is a daze, having queued in Occupation Road for tickets to the away leg from half past ten on Friday night and got no nearer to sleep than ten minutes with my eyes closed. Real life is what awaits in the summer, which might start as soon as Thursday (and that’s a frightening thought). Real life is not Watford, so it’s nothing that I’d be interested in. Â WEMBLEY IS beckoning Watford – but Graham Taylor is refusing to look. The Watford manager was reluctant to acknowledge yesterday that victory in the first leg of the First Division play-off semi-final had improved his team’s chances of reaching the twin towers for the first time since the 1984 FA Cup final. 9th May 1999- New Division One, Watford 1 Grimsby Town 0 Leave a Reply To ensure we made the playoffs we needed to beat Grimsby. http://watford.fcdb.info?id=4356 BSAD report:Â Blindly indulged every superstition available. Lucky shave, lucky boxer shorts, lucky shirt (unwashed during April and May – one man’s disgusting laziness is another’s inspirational magic), lucky view over Watford on the train, lucky programme seller. Qualified virtually every sentence with the phrase “If we make the playoffs…”, for fear of tempting fate. Some of these things are clearly stupid, but this was not the time for taking chances. Everyone was in superstition overdrive, Watford had its fingers crossed.
